Demijohn News - April 2008 Our News: As luck would have it April has been a tremendous month for new experiences. Not only has Demijohn been happily involved in a small explosion of custom from radiant Brides, gallant Grooms and calm Best Men who needed gifts of various sizes and shapes for their weddings, but Frances and I also managed a quick trip across the Channel to dip our toes into fine French cuisine in the beautiful Loire. Despite the obvious stress of wedding planning being great, our newly appointed Weddings Officer, (in the form of one Alastair in Edinburgh), has learnt to handle the nervous Bride more diplomatically than Paton handled the Chinese in the 2007 handover of Hong Kong! I, myself, despite a small amout of conflict resolution in my former life, am humbled by his achievements. But this was only one of our new experiences, for the Loire proved a most incredible adventure. Despite some surprise that the French train system was not quite up to its widely reported excellence, our TGV was overtaken by a Bumble Bee soon after leaving Charles de Gaulle Airport, French cuisine was most certainly excellent and up to speed. Our healthy lack of British media also aided our week away, allowing us to happily forget the gloomy outlook reported at home. We concentrated on the finer things in life, such as the wine, the food and, of course, the numerous Chateaux, but mostly the wine! I had tremendous fun comparing notes on some of their staples such as table wine, cognac, calvados and some interesting liqueurs. While we cannot as yet offer better British table wine than I tried, I am pleased to report that the quality of our British liqueur selection seemingly presents a formidable challenge to them and that our Somerset 10 year Cider Brandy, made so skillfully by Julian Temperley, is a clear contender in the digestif market to both cognac and calvados and should have the French quaking in their boots with its quality. So it is nice to know we are on the right track, and certainly a faster one than the highly acclaimed TGV!
Book a Tasting Evening for fun! We organise tasting evenings on request for groups of between 10 and 20 persons at Demijohn in either Edinburgh or Glasgow or at an external corporate location for similar or larger groups. New bottles will be rolling in through the door over the next month or so with our infamous 500ml Strauss bottle notably putting in a very welcome re-appearance. Known for its Molotov Cocktail type looks, the Strauss can set off a whisky beautifully, or make a fun oil bottle. It has taken a long while but we are now able to offer an Oil Pouring Spout for sale which can be used with virtually all the bottles in our range. This clever new device is here in the nick of time, just ask in store for details!
