A festival of limes and South Uist lobsters!
Its festival time again here at Demijohn, not just because all the annual Edinburgh Festivals combine this week to create a chaotic bubble of talent, but Demijohn is amazingly 4 years old, still going strong and proud of it! We are celebrating in style with the return of our seriously popular Lime Vodka.
It is true to say that a bit more sun would make the Summer, but our new clean, sharp tasting Lime Vodka is blowing the storm clouds away and providing a thwack of festival spirit! As one the most versitile drinks we have ever stocked, this is a cocktail lovers dream. Mix with tonic or lemonade and ice for a long cool Summer drink or take it short over ice with our Nelson's Spiced Rum Liqueur 20% for an instant Demijohn Mohito. Alternatively, if you are an adventurous fan of sea bourne crustaceans like me, then why not use our lime vodka to give your seafood sauce a bit of a snap? Swim to the Gift Ideas section of our online shop to order your bottle and then get cracking on finding some crustaceans!

Demijohn News - July and August 2008 Birthday Edition
Our News: The theme this month is most definitely one of celebration. Demijohn is 4 years old and still going strong! A little look back through our achievements is always fun, especially if you do not know our full story. Frances and I founded Demijohn from scratch in Edinburgh's Grassmarket in July 2004 with only 20 product lines, no idea how to run a business let alone a delicatessen and little money to do it. The idea for filling and refilling bottles after tasting came from an experience I had had as a student while working in Southern Italy and filling up my own containers of wine for parties. I thought we desperately needed something like this in Britain, to bring back the old style British Grocer's shop that the supermarkets stole away from us in the 70's and keep our environmental impact as low as possible. Luckily both Frances and I had a love for seriously good food. We live to eat, not eat to live! Finding the right things to sell was initially down to lots of fun research which involved our favourite pastime, eating and drinking fabulous things. This has still not changed although with 2 children and a third due shortly obviously we are not so good at the drinking bit now! In 4 years we have evolved incredibly, into a an award winning company that stocks 60 lines of predominately Britain's finest handmade wines, spirits, liqueurs, fruit vinegars and olive oil, with 2 successful outlets in Glasgow and Edinburgh, an international mail order business, and a national wholesale business to some of the smartest award winning restaurants, bars and farm shops in the country such as Jimmy's Farm in the South to Iglu closer to home. We need our producers for their skill in producing quality products and luckily they need us to suggest and help develop the new products that you see arriving in the shop. Something you do not see enough of now: small artisan businesses in harmony! High demand for our products has presented many challenging issues. Often just simply having enough stock is a problem as we sell out of all our stuff regularly, although this is certainly a good problem to have! A good business needs good people to run it and we have built a fantastic team together of very loyal and enthusiastic Staff that normally number around 17. It is their constant energy and intelligent input into how we operate and grow that has been responsible for our success to date, so we have much to thank them for. What will happen over the next 4 years is a very exciting thought? Watch this space!
Free Tickets for some of our Forthcoming Events
Having just about recovered from our adventures at a very hot CLA Game Fair at Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire at the end of July we have returned to take part in the Edinburgh Festival. We will be exhibiting at Foodies at the Festival again this year on Stand 14. This significant food event will run on both Sat 23 and Sun 24 August in the Edinburgh Sheraton Hotel in Festival Square. The good news is that I have a number of tickets to handout for those that would like to come and avoid the entry charge! However, I also need your help in increasing our mailing list with details of any your friends that you think might like us and do not already receive our email news letter. Therefore, I will exchange one ticket in return for a minimum of 3 of your friends' email addresses which can be added to our mailing list database. There is no limit to how many tickets you can apply for, however they will be issued on a first come first served basis. In order to claim your free ticket please simply send an email to me at info@demijohn.co.uk including your full postal address for sending the tickets to and the name and email addresses of your freinds. The rules: Please ensure that you have your friends' authority to use their email address in this way. Email addresses that already appear on our database will not count, sorry! I will be on stage during the event running an Olive Oil Tasting Theatre, so if you would like to get oily please come along. Events for September and beyond will appear in future newsletters.
New Product News
Many fantastic new products have arrived since I last wrote. Ready to try is a fabulous new cask strength 17 year old Clynelish Single Malt Whisky 60.3%. This subtle single cask malt from the Elgin distillery is quite frankly brilliant! Our new Lemon Vodka Liqueur 22.5% from Wales has taste like a refined Limoncello and has caused a tremendous storm, balancing well with our new Lime Vodka Liqueur 24% from Worcestershire which is clean and fresh. This is a citrus lovers' heaven! Finally our Elderflower Vinegar from the Dalmeny Estate just North of Edinburgh is selling extremely fast. Please note this is seriously limited and therefore if you are a big fan please come and buy some soon before it is all gone! Details of all the new products can be found in our online shop Coming soon: Something new and oily!. More in the next newsletter.
Staff News
End of Summer term at the Universities nearly always sees a change over in our Staff, and this year is no different. Toby Butler from our Glasgow team sadly leaves us for pastures new, we wish him all the best of luck! Some good news however. We can actually finally announce who our long awaited new member to our full time team in Edinburgh is. A big welcome to Fran Tomlin, who has settled in Edinburgh from Yorkshire and has been doing fantastic work in our Edinburgh shop from day one. Thank you to all those who helped us try to identify a new Staff member and to those who applied but were not successful. We wish you luck with your hunt.
If you require further information or have any comments to make about us at Demijohn please call +44(0)141 3373600 or email me at info@demijohn.co.uk
