Demijohn News - December 2009
Our News: December is normally a period free of events for us, which for me brings some relief from the intensive workload they create. But crazy as a cat in changing weather, I decided that we should squeeze one more in the events calendar this year, and run our very own Christmas Fair at the impressive Kibble Palace in Glasgow's Botanic Gardens in aid of Maggie's Cancer Centres. So this is the story, brought to you from someone who has never organised a fair before! If I thought for a moment it would be easy, I was wrong. But I have learnt through life that when organising anything, one has to be prepared for the unexpected and the unexpected in this case was positively tropical! The concept was simple, start with a few Demijohn cocktails, bring on some delightful music, roll out a celebrity endorsement and provide lots of nice products to buy of which 10% all goes for a good cause. Picture this then of the opening night. The venue, one of the most beautifully styled and kept tropical glass houses in the World. Its pleasant humid warmth that only a heated glasshouse could provide. Its foliage filled interior, lit up atmospherically on a cold night from within. Kirsty Wark on her podium, toasting the Fair's success for Maggies with a demijohn cocktail in one hand and a striking of enthusiasm with the other. Delightful classical music in the background from Carla Chiappa & Ailsa Aitkenhead of Edinburgh University School of Music on their debut night as the now famous duet "Carla & Ailsa" (and bookable yourself, telephone Carla: 07891405393). Like a souk, the chatter of many happy visitors and hum of restless trade (about 1000 attended the 2 day event!). The munching of Heart Buchanan's delicious canapes. Then also picture this, the first evening draws to a close, weary and shattered I turn to my co-organising partner Netty Hammond Chambers of Chuffs, for whom the event would have been impossible without, and ask, "where are you sleeping?" She replies in a nonchalant tone, "why, the Ambassador Hotel of course, and you?" I reply somberly, "in the Kibble Palace with all my friends the plants!" And so I did, volunteer myself for security duty. To keep safe stock and sleep with plants all night. You can only imagine what I resembled in the morning after my jungle like sleep. The Kibble Palace Christmas Fair was a success, raising around £5,500 for Maggies and will be run again next year. There are too many persons to thank who made the Fair possible, such as the Maggies Team and Fi from Heart Buchanan, but one man in particular Ewen Donaldson, the General Manager of Glasgow's Botanic Gardens, must be singled out as an example of the magical quality being employed by Glasgow City Council these days. Without Ewen our task would have been painfully impossible. Look out for my invitation email in November next year, this is not one to be missed!
