Demijohn News - February 2008
Our News: Much has happend since my last letter and although I did manage a little trip off to the French Alps to slide around on skiis for a week, my time of course was not wasted! I re-discovered Genepi, a charming French liqueur made with a high concentration of the mountain plant, a touch of sugar and although they do not admit it, a trace of aniseed I think. Of course, this would not be for everyone, a gin lover you would need to be, but I think the challenge is on for us to attempt a Scottish equivalent with heather! Any volunteers out there? This month has also seen another revolutionary first for Demijohn with the creation of our first Bar Concession with Iglu in the New Town of Edinburgh. We have been supplying Iglu's fabulous award winning restaurant and bar with a number of potions from our selection over the last 3 years. Finally, after much R&D, we have produced something truly unique, a device for them to dispense our drinks in their bar in a similar style to the demijohns in our shops. Quirky, unusual, eye catching, beautiful to look at and easy to use. You never know this might just catch on! After four hours of drilling into their interior granite wall to fix our bottles up, I now feel I have a special relationship with their environment. If you have yet to discover Iglu, I urge you to check out their new menu now. Drilling has been slightly a theme this month, as that was exactly what I thought I might get when I decided to accept an invitation to conduct a Demijohn Tasting Evening for around 40 Staff, Parents and Pupils at my old school, Glenalmond College in Perthshire. Luckily for me times have changed. Drilling was most certainly not on the menu and life at Glenalmond seems altogether more civilised than my fond memories of this wonderful School set in the most incredible rural location imaginable. The evening was a tremendous success and I met some good old friends as well as many new enthusiasts for us. A big thankyou to Emma Woods, Wife of the current Headmaster, for inviting me along. February will close I think with a blast, eminating from the vocal cords of Edinburgh University Students singing glorious opera! We are proud to sponsor for the 3rd year running Edinburgh Studio Opera in their double bill production of John Blow's Venus & Adonis and G. F. Handel's Acis & Galatea. Having seen their rehearsals the other evening I can report that once again they are displaying an amazingly high standard of production that can only be described as of a professional standard. This is well worth coming to see if you have the time. The virtual curtain will rise each evening 7.30pm with performances taking place in the charming St Cecilia's Hall in the Cowgate, Edinburgh. The Opera opens on Fri 22 Feb and runs for a further 3 nights on Sat 23rd, Mon 25th and Tue 26th Feb 2008. Further details on tickets and directions can be found on their website www.studio-opera.co.uk

New Product News
Lack of rain on the Continent of Europe has produced dreadful conditions for the 2007 olive oil harvest. Many of the producing nations have been left extremely short of olive oil for even their own consumption let alone export. Tuscany for example has seen its production totals reduce by as much as 80%. None more seriously effected than our much prized Villa Montalbano Estate crop, which has failed completely for the first time in many years and left us with no oil this year, very sad. Luckily the owners of Villa Montalbano offered to help us find a suitable temporary replacement oil. We have now recieved olive oil from another family owned single estate just South of Florance called Mercatale. Their oil, while very different in flavour, is first class and we have hopefully just enough to bridge the gap until the 2008 olive crop brings another plentiful supply of oil from Villa Montalbano. More detail on our Mercatale Extra Virgin Olive Oil is available in our online shop Coming soon: Some lovely new wooden boxes, 2 new single malts whiskies and a whole rash of new liqueurs for 2008. More in the next newsletter.
