Demijohn News - February 2010
Our News:  Its chilly up North again.  Recently I seem always to be writing this Mrs Pate receives her winning hamper in the Demijohn British Liqueur Competition 2010newsletter when there is snow falling.  I hope there is no link, or at least as much linkage as a cold Britain and a warm Winter Olympics!  Speaking of competitions I have a nice success story.  I can now officially announce the winner (Gold Medal) of our very first British Liqueur Competition 2010.  After much deliberation and tasting, a very proud Mrs Pate of Milngavie, Glasgow was awarded her £100 Demijohn Hamper for her creative entry, a deliciously fruity Raspberry Whisky Liqueur.  We had an impressive array of entries to our very first official Liqueur Competition which ranged from clever cream liqueurs, rocket fuelled Limoncellos and even one using a mince pie!  The competition standard was incredibly high and we were all mightily impressed Our Yorkshire Liqueur Selection, a great Mothers' Day present idea?with the time and effort that those who entered put in to their entries.  Well done to you all!  In fact so good were the entries that we have decided to award 6 runners up a prize.  The runners up will each receive a £20 Demijohn Gift Voucher shortly.  The good news for those of you who missed your opportunity to shine in the home production department is that we will be running our liqueur competition again throughout 2010 with a deadline for entries in early 2011.  We will be sending out details in our newsletters over the coming months.  February has brought us another small unexpected success, despite its cold weather.  For five years or so we have received many great big hulking wooden pallets with our supplies on.  Some we are able to re-pack with our goods and send on to others, but inevitably it The Pallet Palace!seems one ends up with an annoying surplus that nobody really wants.  Well at last I had one of my eureka moments and found a use for these troublesome brutes while my children were on half term and we were thinking of the Olympic Bobsleigh championships and activities to amuse them.  I sat them down at a table and together we designed the very first "Pallet Palace" with is own Olympic Bobsleigh run (or slide to you and I)!  It took two days to make.  After much hammering and sawing, I had cleverly recycled virtually all my ugly spare pallet materials into what resembles an Unidentified Feature Of the wood kind!  With children amused and environmental conscience partly cleansed I was able to return to work .......

Product News
A Verdi 200ml bottle of our new Black Cherry Liqueur 20%We now have a new cask of Caol Ila on tap in the shops as well as our fabulous new Black Cherry Liqueur 20%.  Our new Black Cherry is a gin based liqueur and made for us by Colin and Phyllis Hingston in Worcestershire.  It has a strong rich taste with a subtle sweetness that allows all the flavour of the fruit to come through.  We are still experimenting, but as a base for a kir with sparkling wine or Champagne it is first class.  We have no doubt that there are some great cocktail recipes out there for it, so if you have any ideas you would like to share please send them in!  If they are good, we will even credit them to you and publish them on our Cocktail Recipes pages.  Now there is a challenge!
Coming soon:  Another new cask of whisky, a new fruity vinegar to bring in the Spring.

Don't forget to sort out your Mothers' Day presents as soon as possible, good luck!

           Yours Angus
