Demijohn News - September 2007
Our News: Since I last wrote the Summer has seemingly come to end, but did it really ever start? We could debate that one until the cows come home! Luckily there was a small patch of sun that rose over the southern end of Loch Lomond for the annual Food and Drink Festival in which we took part at the begining of the month. It was great to see so many returning faces and many new ones too. The event seems to be gathering strength, with a wonderful continental market as well as many really good local producers exhibiting this year. It is certainly worth a look next year if you are in the area. I seem to have done a lot of talking this month, Frances says this is normal, but so early in the year! My first talk was to more than 40 wonderful ladies of the Carnbo Womens' Rural Institute on Mon 17 Sept at the Carnbo Village Hall near Milnathort. They had kindly asked me along with the intention of me entertaining them for an hour or so on the history of Demijohn. I thought all I had to do was talk and offer a few liqueurs, but no, it was much more difficult than that. I had to judge not only the cocktail making competition (my sort of thing!), but also the flower competition (possibly not my sort of thing!). If my success could be measured by the amount of tea and cakes I was awarded at the end of the evening, I think it is safe to say that I got away with it! Thank you ladies of the WRI for being so nice to me, you are welcome for tea at Demijohn anytime. My second talk of the month was to 15 or so budding ex-military entrepreneurs at HMS Caledonia as part of the Career Transition Partnership. As you can imagine, only being the very next day after my WRI talk I was all prepared for more competitions to judge. Alas, those newly developed skills were not tested and they suffered a dry talk on the ups and downs of new business. The talking is certainly not over yet, I am afraid to say, as I have now been asked to talk about my passion for Olive Oil not only at the Ideal Home Show in Glasgow on Sat 20 and Sun 21 Oct, but also at the BBC Good Food Show at the SECC in Glasgow which we will also be exhibiting between Fri 2 to Sun 4 Nov on Stand C100.
New Products
Our Sloe Vodka trial at Foodies at the Festival last month went down extremely well with a virtual sell out. We are currently awaiting more stock which should be with us by the middle of October if you are wondering where it has got to. However, there are many other new products to consider in addition to our Sloe Gins arrival. Our new deliciously sharp Cranberry Gin Liqueur 17%, made by ex-hospital phamarcist Rosie Sedgwick in Cheshire, provides us with another clean tasting gin liqueur. We have also seriously extended our bottle range. Recently introduced is the eye catching, yard of ale styled, 1500ml Tulipano bottle. If you are looking for impact, look no further than this bottle of extremes. Our new Apotheker range has brought us an irresistable 1 litre bottle, perfect for Sloe Gin or Olive oil, and a minature 40ml bottle ideal for a pre-christmas sample set to try out a few new products or convert into personalised wedding favours. Coming Soon: A new Spanish olive oil from Carboneras, and a new single malt whisky for Christmas. More in my next letter.
Forthcoming Demijohn Events
We will be rattling the boards of the Slow Food tent once more on Sunday 30 September as we take part in another Slow Food event at North Berwick. The food fair will run from 11.30am to 4pm at the Seabird Centre as usual. Roasted pigs on spits and many other slow food tasting opportunites will hopefully make it a tasteful day out! We then head North to Aboyne, Aberdeenshire to take part in the first of many charitable Christmas Fairs, The Kincardine Sale in aid of Childern 1st. It will be held in Coo Cathedral on Wed 3 (6-8pm) and Thurs 4 Oct (10am-4pm). Tel: 01224 251150 for directions. Raffle tickets are now on sale in our shops in aide of the event also. We are taking part in the first Scottish BBC Good Food Show in Glasgow between Fri 2 to Sun 4 Nov and will be exhibiting on Stand C100 in the British Food area.
Staff News
Sadly we have said goodbye to Ingrid Hedelin who leaves us to return to her native home, Sweeden and continue her studies. She has been a great help in getting us through a busy festival in Edinburgh and we wish her all the best of luck for her future. Our next Demijohn team event is fast approaching and will involve picking sloe in rural Galloway, South West Scotland. Many friendly farmers and land owners have been persuaded to part with their valuable crop of sloe, which we will then use to create in part next years batch of Demijohn Sloe Gin. Next months newsletter will tell the full story about our sloe picking adventures. Let's hope the weather is kind!
