Demijohn News - November 2011
Our News:
Toffee, a cold cat!"Let it no snow," as they now say in Scotland after last year's big dump of the white stuff! We have had a little flutter here and there but nothing to get too excited about yet. But wet, windy and cold? Yes definitely! Our cat, aptly named Toffee, has taken to hugging the aga! Who is actually warming who is the question? I find being busy the best way to avoid the cold. But in December at Demijohn we reach a level of exhaustion that only the mad and foolish can enjoy. For this reason we normally choose to avoid booking events in December, but this year I for some reason against my better The Highland and Lowland Malt Stackjudgment agreed to 3 tasting evenings. On 1st Dec, simultaneous tastings took place in our Glasgow and York Shops. I hosted a fun group of Glasgow Young Professionals in our Glasgow Shop, while in York, Mark, our Shop Manager there, entertained an another enthusiastic group of friends for Mrs Angela James. Our third and last will be in Wed in Glasgow this week. I will conduct a special tasting for our friends from Slow Food Glasgow who are a seriously brilliant bunch of foodies. Expect there to be much drinking of olive oil, sniffing of whisky and general foodie chat! I'll let you know how it went in January if my body survives the night! While we will not be running any more tasting events in 2011, our tasting evenings are a great way of shrugging off the Janaury blues with friends and work colleagues. Click Book a Tasting Event for more details.

Product News - How creative are you?
Ever heard the expression "we're working on it?" Well actually, when it comes to developing new food and drink products that can be poured into a bottle we generally are! At present there a no fewer than 5 new products in development Demijohn Liqueur Awards 2010 - Could this be you winning a hamper?of some form. The ideas for them can come from various sources, but if you're someone who experiments at home with food and drink then you might just provide our next source of inspiration. My love of meeting people and chatting about their ideas has meant that 2011 has been a bumper year for the Demijohn ideas factory. Frances, my Wife, is generally the one to then start mixing potions in our kitchen to see what might work. Sadly only a very few make it through the testing stage, but there is a lot of fun in trying! One of the most recent and ingenious ideas came from a customer we met at the BBC Good Food Show at the end of Nov. He had created a new drink, sloe infused cider, aka "Slider." In fact, he very kindly donated a sizeable bottle for Tim and I to consume while on duty...and we certainly felt the effects! Slider will not make it on to the Demijohn shelves I think due to the bubbles, but it did earn its creator a free bottle from us! In 2012 we will have another competition for making things via our Facebook page. So if you have an idea you that you think is good enough to share, then please "like" us on Facebook and join in our conversations. Who knows, you could win a prize and see your idea become the next Demijohn brew!

Staff News
Alastair and Amelia share a glass after a hard day of picking Elderflower with Team Demijohn in 2009We are now a larger organisation than at any other time in our 7 year history and we have welcomed a wonderful bunch of new talent across the businesss to assist with the current seasonal demands. I am sorry if you tried to join us but have been unsuccessful this time, thankyou for trying. It is not all good news however. Sadly we have finally said goodbye to one of our longest serving members (or Demijohnies as we are sometimes known). Alastair Simpson leaves his post as Shop Manager Edinburgh to follow a new path, we wish him all the best of luck although I am sure he will not need it. Ceara East, also another long term Demijohnie who has been employed by us no less than 3 times in 7 years, has left to start a new career in broadcasting in which I know she will excel. Like all of our ex members, we hope they will stay in regular contact. James Acheson, our tall Irishman, assumes the top position in Edinburgh from Alastair as Shop Manager and has already found himself to be a natural leader. However, please be a little gentle on him until at least January!
of course!
