DEMIJOHN PIONEERS ECO-FRIENDLY LIQUID DELI RETAILING
Taking a leaf out of the Italian cantinas Demijohn, Scotland’s first liquid deli, is pioneering environmentally-friendly food retailing. With virtually no packaging – they use bottles that can be recycled – and eco-friendly displays, they are the ultimate eco-friendly retailer.
Demijohn is a unique company selling unique products. With a large range of interesting spirits, liqueurs and whiskies, as well as delicious oils and naturally-flavoured vinegars they are the closest Britain has come to the environmentally-friendly continental markets.
Most of Demijohn’s products are stored in huge recycled glass jars from Italy and are re-filled from vats or drums. Customers then choose the products and pick their own size and shape of Italian glass bottle into which the oil, vinegar or liqueur is placed. The bottle can then be re-filled when required.
Demijohn founder and owner Angus Ferguson says: “Our aim at Demijohn is to have the least impact on the environment as possible. All our containers are recycled and our products are sourced, where possible, from eco-friendly producers. We are incredibly conscious of the impact of retail on the environment and have maximised every effort to be one of the most eco-friendly food and drink retailers.”
Most of the Demijohn products come, where possible, from local producers round Scotland. The latest addition to their range – Organic Rhubarb Vodka Liqueur - comes from an organic farmer in Invernesshire. Many of the products use locally sourced ingredients – sloes from the hedgerows, elderflowers from the lanes and raspberries from the raspberry fields of Angus – and most are only produced when the products are in season.
Demijohn is linked strongly and recommended by Slow Food as it epitomises the drive for sourcing from local artisan producers using fair, clean and sustainable methods of production.
Angus Ferguson says: “We aim to operate like a continental cooperative where we source products from good, local producers and give them a marketing outlet worldwide via our shops and mail order online service. It is a new way of shopping for many British consumers but the success of it is plain to see as our sales have been increasing dramatically year on year.”
Even the Demijohn shops have their eco stamp. All the large wood shelves that hold the demijohns are made from ash which comes from sustainable woods in Fife.
Demijohn first opened its doors in 2004 with a shop in Edinburgh and subsequently one in Glasgow. It now has a thriving online and mail order business and has expanded to offering over 60 different exciting products. The essence of the Demijohn shops is for customers to taste each product before purchasing.
Demijohn will be launching their new product range on Stand E958 at the CLA Game Fair held Blenheim Palace between Fri 25 and Sun 27 July 2008.
