DEMIJOHN TAKE THE SLOW ROUTE TO PRODUCING FINE SLOE GIN
9th September 2009
Demijohn, the world’s first liquid deli, is passionate about its Sloe Gin and to ensure there is enough for the next year they are heading off for a hard day’s picking of the hedgerows.Demijohn is not just a retailer of unusual and innovative drinks. It is so concerned about how they are produced that they have become closely involved in sourcing the original ingredients. Due to the unpredictability of sloes (they grow wild in only certain places) the Demijohn team are heading to Dumfriesshire to pick sloes on 13 Oct. These are sent to Colin and Phyllis Hingston in Worcestershire who slowly turn it into Sloe Gin. This noble team-building effort boosts the Hingston’s existing supply of sloes from other areas of the UK to create a truly remarkable drink. Sloes are in abundance this year in Scotland so the Hingstons are overwhelmed by this gesture.
Sloe Gin is a rich, very British liqueur and the perfect finish to a fine meal or as a tipple in a hip flask while out on a bracing walk. The combination of the bitter sloes, sugar and London Gin which, steeped together for a few months, creates a dark, delicious syrupy liqueur. The 2008 harvest has only recently arrived in Demijohn, such is the care and perfection in its creation.
Demijohn’s Owner Angus Ferguson says: “With the opening of our new shop in York and an even higher demand for Sloe Gin we are keen to ensure a steady supply of this extra special drink. We are also passionate about the provenance of our products and are keen to source the original ingredients wherever we can. It makes the eventual Sloe Gin even more special when it arrives next year!”
The essence of the Demijohn shops is for customers to taste each product before purchasing. The shops are simple and eco-friendly with wooden shelves of large glass Demijohns (large glass bottles traditionally used for storing wines and spirits from which the deli takes its name.) Customers choose their product and the size and shape of glass bottle, which can then be re-filled when empty.
The Sloe Gin can either be purchased from Demijohn’s shops in Edinburgh or Glasgow, or the new shop in York, or from the online shop – www.demijohn.co.uk
