Sloe Gin is the perfect autumnal and winter drink but depends entirely on a good crop of sloes. This year’s harvest in England is small so liquid deli Demijohn is mounting a sloe pickathon.

Demijohn is not just a retailer of unusual and innovative drinks. It is so concerned about how they are produced that they have become closely involved in sourcing the original ingredients. Due to the unpredictability of sloes (they are plentiful in Scotland but not western England this year) the Demijohn team are heading to Galloway to pick sloes on Sun 17th October. These are sent to Colin and Phyllis Hingston in Worcestershire who slowly turn it into Sloe Gin. This noble team-building effort boosts the Hingston’s existing supply of sloes from other areas of the UK to create a truly remarkable drink. Sloes are in abundance this year in Scotland but very few in England so this is a necessary exercise.

Demijohn has also just introduced a delicious new Sloe Sherry Liqueur made in Yorkshire. Like Sloe Gin but less rich and perfect for pre dinner or for those non-gin drinkers, this is a wonderful autumnal tipple. Both Sloe Gin and Sloe Sherry take months to produce so without this pickathon next year’s supply will be low.

Demijohn’s Owner Angus Ferguson says: “We are hoping to exceed our record pick of 90kg of sloes in 2007. With now two producers to supply and a huge rise in demand for Sloe Gin – and beginning for Sloe Sherry – we need team Demijohn to strip the blackthorn and pick as many berries as possible. We are passionate about the provenance and traceability of our products and are keen to source the original ingredients wherever we can. It makes the eventual Sloe Gin and Sloe Sherry even more special when it arrives next year!”
