DEMIJOHN UNVEIL TWO NEW UNIQUE WHISKIES RARELY AVAILABLE
Clynelish is not a name well known among single malts and was until recently rarely available and used more commonly in Johnny Walker blends. A true Highland malt, the Clynelish Distillery is situated at Brora on Scotland’s north east coast. Demijohn was one of the lucky few to secure a cask, which has had a healthy 17 years of ageing. They have left the cask exactly as found at 60.3% abv or cask strength.
The uniqueness of Demijohn whiskies is that customers choose the size and shape of a re-useable bottle (from 40ml to 2 litres), which is then filled with the whisky of their choice from a special wooden cask, allowing them to choose exactly how much they would like. They can then return with the bottle to have it re-filled.
Clynelish whisky has a hint of toffee, possibly even bananas, on the nose and a whiff of the fresh North Sea breeze. To the palate it has a rich, peaty taste with a spicy explosion. This is a whisky for a special occasion with an extreme smoothness despite its strength and it will not disappoint.
Linkwood is a very elusive whisky from close to Elgin and it has taken Demijohn three years to obtain another cask. This 15 year old cask strength malt has an attractive pale mahogany colour. On the nose it is rich and the first aromas are of dried fruit (apricot and sultanas) and then a deep rich prune-like quality. The addition of a little water rounds off the aroma and introduces treacle toffee and liquorice, with some ground nuts coming through.
Demijohn was created in July 2004 by Angus and Frances Ferguson. They share a passion for fine food and drink and saw a need in Scotland for a European-style liquid deli selling products from large vats called demijohns. They now have two shops in Edinburgh and Glasgow and a healthy online business – www.demijohn.co.uk
Angus Ferguson says: “These two new unique whiskies are something very special. We always try to source products that are rarely available elsewhere and are of a superior quality, which epitomises these whiskies. As a gift or just to drink on your own the Clynelish or the Linkwood are in a class of their own.”
