Kabbadades Extra Virgin Olive Oil (Jan 2009 Harvest)

QuestionHow is this made?
The Samoily’s family have farmed the Kabbadates estate for over 300 years, and are famed for having introduced the Koroneiki olive to Corfu, which was later to become the olive of choice for the local producers on this beautiful Greek Island, and is commonly agreed to produce the best Olive Oil in Greece. The trees are hand pruned in the spring and the olives harvested from November through until April. This ‘over-wintering’ of the fruit is possible in Greece due to the mildness of their winters; the technique is also practised to a limited extent in some other countries, but only if an exceptionally mild and delicate oil is desired. The common Corfiot and Greek harvesting method of combing the ripe olives from the trees is used. Importantly, Demijohn is the first to import their oil into the UK to sell. Of the annual production of about 800 litres, any remaining oil not taken by Demijohn will be sold on to the local Greek Co-operative mill for blending with other Corfu or Greek oils. www.agni.gr/greek_life/olives.asp

Tasting Notes
This oil is the Jan 2009 harvest from the Kabbadades Estate in Corfu. Its balanced taste has been extraordinarily popular with all who have tried it, and it remains a first class single estate extra virgin olive oil.  It is beautifully light, with a taste of fresh grass and an almost perfec ....moret amount of pepper at the end to make it interesting yet not overpowering.  Delightful would be a good word to describe this magical oil that is quite literally drinkable.  Time has mellowed this oil slightly, but it is still fresh to taste and it now accompanies our less strong vinegars such as apple, raspberry and elderflower fruit vinegars extremely well.   The Samoilys family have farmed the Kabbadades estate for 300 years and are famed for havng introduced the Koroneika olive to Corfu 50 years ago, which was later to become the olive of choice by the local producers on this beautiful Greek Island. Our introduction to the oil was similar to many of our introductions to new products, a combination of luck and chance via a family friend. Without their kind help this wonderful oil would still be stuck in Corfu! ...less
