Tasting Notes
Mead is perhaps the oldest alcoholic drink in the world and was traditionally consumed at weddings, hence a possible source of the name, honeymoon. It is smooth to drink, gentle on the digestion and packed full of wonderful honey aromas and taste.
How is this best drunk?
We believe that you can enjoy Mead on all occasions as an aperitif. In summer it is delicious chilled and can be served in the place of a pudding wine with cheese. In winter it makes a wonderfully warming mulled drink.
How is this made?
Our Traditional Mead, or Honey Wine is made from a simple blend of British honey, water and yeast by a small team of passionate individuals at Nigel Howard's West Country Winery in Devon. We should know as Frances and I went to visit them to see how it was done. Nigel, a retired banker who escaped the City in 1994 to make wine, uses both traditional and modern production methods to create some really unique drinks. His Mead is just another good example of his artisan production skills.
