The Utterly Hopeless Romantic

The Utterly Hopeless Romantic

One for the Heart - A 500ml Heart shaped bottle filled with Raspberry Vodka LiqueurBeing the ever perspiring (inspiring) romantic, enjoy these words of passion:

"Whisky Burns-my throat, not a forest.
Love Burns - my heart, not a forest.
As for the forest, it's burnt itself... at least that's what I told the police..." - Jarod Kintz

Ah... that quote takes me straight back to my first girlfriend who I tried to impress one Valentine's Day. Arriving at the house a little after 6am, I spent an hour meticulously designing and executing a huge heart with our initials on her front lawn drawn in lighter fluid. Then just as the match hit the ground the call was placed. And in a husky voice I said:
"Look out of your window"
..."who is this?"
"Look out of your window"
(Phone hangs up)
And the lovely unsuspecting girl moves over to her window to find her Father's immaculate garden erupting in flames with a hooded figure running away (to get water...)

What can I say, Demijohn didn't exist then....

Now, you can write a message on the bottle, anything you like such as declarations of love, all 19 stanzas of the 'Lady of Shallot', even a heart with initials on it. Oh, if only I'd known. Maybe her family would not have moved to Worcester to escape the pending arsonist threat!

The most popular bottle for a true romantic, our One for the Heart filled with our very special Raspberry Vodka Liqueur to give it that perfect pink tint, might be the ideal present? Then again, at Demijohn we also realise that this might not be everyones tipple of choice or preferential receptacle.

As the very wise and wonderfully stylish Carrie Bradshaw says: "I'd much rather be someone's shot of Whisky than everyone's cup of tea."

What Carrie is saying here....

In my belief of unfaltering literary excellence, is buy lots of Whisky, and if Whittards do not have it, come to Demijohn!

A Scottish SelectionWe do have some of the best Single Cask, Single Malt Scotch Whiskies in the World which can be decanted into any bottle you wish to allow you to choose a little bit of everything. Our Scottish Selection includes 3 of our most favoured whiskies encased in a beautiful wooden rack:

Our Bramble Scotch Whisky Liqueur, a beautifully smooth and rich whisky liqueur. A great as an alternative to Port that is fruity on the palate and has a deep whisky finish.

Demijohn's Finest Blended Scotch Whisky. This is the king of all blends, with characteristics drawn from Speyside and a hint of Islay, it has a beautiful broadness in its flavours.

And lastly, our Bladnoch Single Cask Single Malt Whisky. This is the jewel in the top of the staff. It is the connoisseurs whisky, and if you are not a connoisseur it is a great one to start off with. Being wonderfully palatable at its strength well over 50%, this whisky does not give all its secrets away on its first taste. It develops on the from the nose, to a taste all the way through, to a lasting almost sweet finish. It is one to be savoured and enjoyed.

"Love makes the world go round...Whisky makes it go round twice as fast!" - Compton Mackenzie.

Celebrate Burns Night with a Wee Dram

Posted in Flavours of the Month Events Blog , by Mark Perkins, on 16th January 2015

The Demijohn Team celebrates Burns Night in Glasgow in Jan 2011Celebrate Burns Night with a Wee Dram...

"O thou, my muse! guid auld Scotch drink!
Whether thro' wimplin worms thou jink,
Or, richly brown, ream owre the brink,
In glorious faem,
Inspire me, till I lisp an' wink,
To sing thy name!"

As you may well be aware, Demijohn started over 10 years ago on Victoria Street in Edinburgh. And ever since staff have been following the owners Angus and Frances Ferguson ceilidh dancing, whisky drinking, haggis eating, cooking Rabbie Burns night recipes, even a bit of original poetry reading... and many other Burns Night Traditions!

We have, in the last 5 years taken our Scottish ways down to England when opening our York and, last year, our Oxford shop. We have decorated them with Burns poems written on bottles, our produce from Inverness, Glasgow, East Lothian, Comrie and Dalmeny, and even the odd bit of Bag piping here and there!

If you would like to celebrate with some of our Scottish produce, get yourself the Scottish rack and have a dram with us! Included in this rack we have the best selling Rhubarb Vodka from Inverness, drop it in a little Prosecco for some really joyous effervescence!

We have our wonderful retired PE teachers from East Lothian, Robin and Derry Ford making our Bramble Scotch Whisky Liqueur (my favourite), Gooseberry Gin Liqueur and Raspberry Vodka Liqueur. And to crown the selection with the king of liqueurs, the Spiced Rum Liqueur made not too far from Glasgow by Roy and Penny Lewis.

... now if Robbie Burns Supper to you means just a fairly large tipple of Liquid Sunshine, also known as whisky. Demijohn has just the thing for that too, take a look at our latest whisky blogs or sign up to one of our Burns Night Tastings on Thurs 22 Jan 2015 and try some of our whisky first hand.

All in Favour say, I Do

Posted in Events Blog , by Mark Perkins, on 9th February 2014

Being married myself for 18 months (and not regretting it yet!), suddenly I find myself doing wedding shows across the UK. Mark's Big Day!Not from a panicked 'It's happening in a month and we have no dress, no rings, no vicar... NO VENUE!' way; I am selling our beautiful Wedding Favours to couples and families who want something a little different for their wedding party.

I therefore thought I would sit back, a sizeable amount of Bramble Scotch Whisky Liqueur in hand (to stop the shaking from post traumatic stress you understand!), and actually assess this 'Wedding Favour' market I suddenly find myself in!

The Wedding Conundrum

On what is meant to be 'your day', why are you buying presents for Great Uncle Phineus and Aunty Derry (or as she is known amongst family, One Sherry Derry!)?

Well, as my Father said, "The wedding is for everyone else to feel involved in a huge change of your life, the Honeymoon and the Marriage after is for you." Closely followed by, "Come to think of it, it's very special, you have everyone you love in one room! That will only ever happen twice, your wedding and your ...!"

Successful Planning

One of the main things that became apparent with both planning my wedding and seeing my friends' get married, was that to make a wedding successful, you actually need very little. In my opinion, as long as you have everyone there who means Fila 100ml bottles used as wedding favourssomething to you, the number one thing for a wedding to be successful is just to ensure comfort of all of the guests.

This was the main reason for not being allowed my pixie themed wedding on the top of the black mountains in Tipi's, with the main budget going on Fire Jugglers and Acrobats. Apparently, "Grandma and Grandad would not be able to get up the hill, pee in the bush or enjoy the ceremony sitting on their backsides, on rock, in the rain."

Even my reasoning, that everyone would have a skin-full of Ginger Wine for both energy to get up the mountain and warmth to brace them from the wind, was not successful.

So once we had decided to go for a venue, with a toilet, and figured out how to get all the old 'uns from the church to the meal, the stress levels went down.

Can Anyone Help?

We had people every weekend asking if they could help. Once we had invited everyone, we had wedding presents coming in, friends cleaning the church, Groomsmen organising the flowers, school pals buying the rings, University mates pooling vehicles for a one day taxi service to and from the station, family sorting the suits...

A Wedding is Ultimately for You

So I kind of agree with my Dad. A wedding day is for everyone else. However, the magical thing is everyone else is there for Wedding Favours using Goccia 100ml and Apotheker 40ml bottlesyou. They are friends and family for life, but that day they are your Best Man, the proud Mother-in-law, Fun Groomsmen, Beautiful Bridesmaids and guests (Who am I kidding - who would have got Great Uncle Phineus Dancing if Derry had not downed the wine at dinner!).

That is why I bought Wedding Favours, a token to try and express a fraction of the thanks you feel for actually making that day as special as a... Clynelish Single Cask Single Malt Whisky (Well, I had to get a product in somewhere on this blog!).

Good luck with your plans,

The Mystical Corridor of Demijohn Delights

Posted in Events Blog , by Mark Perkins, on 12th November 2013

Mark and Vikki in all their Demijohn glory!

Our first time of exhibiting at the Living North Christmas Fair, came with the distinctly difficult trial of finding a position to put us. The Food Marquee was full, as was the warm Food Hall with its heart warming Christmas jingles oozing from its doors in sound waves of treacle glistening from a warm, homely fudge-cake... So where was the Christmas marvel that is Demijohn going to fit?

And much like the fourteenth winter coat, the twenty fourth pair of shoes and that hat that you use all the time, (so that it is never worth putting away) we were put into 'the corridor' And what a truly winning and enchanting spot it was. Demijohn turned an ordinary looking corridor into something special and enchanting!

The wind howling outside, running past the entrance like an invisible icy hair drier, blowing all hairstyles horizontal on leaving - we felt like the outside was Narnia and we were the wardrobe! In this wonderfully fictitious world, Demijohn was the equivalent of Mr. Tumnus' cup of tea ... A pleasant stop you never intended taking, to then discover you had been enjoying the delights for a whole afternoon ... Enticed by the hypnotic colours of our Raspberry Vodka and Seville Orange Gin liqueurs and occasionally being entertained by the singing and dancing of myself and Vikki.

Then, the Ice Queen came, freezing the olive oil, the hands, the bottles and even threatening to dampen and oppress our feelings of joy! But NO! Fuelled by the sunny warmth of Bramble Scotch Whisky Liqueur, the folk of Demijarnia left the stand with more smiles than before, some with a lighter wallet and happier heart; and some, having to leave the corridor (the gateway to another world) even doubting whether the delights of Demijarnia even existed! For if you were to go back to that place, all you would find is an ordinary looking corridor, with ordinary looking lights in an ordinary looking building...

Thank you all for your support at Newcastle and I am very much looking forward seeing more of you at York this week!

Cocktails, Crooners and Citrus Sundowner's

Mark on top form on the stand!Huddersfield Food and Drink Festival

Who would have thought, tucked away in West Yorkshire, there was a festival as EPIC as this one!

Huddersfield Food and Drink Festival is not only one of the most successful shows we do, it is also the most fun...
Step straight off the train, walk out of the station and you are there; exotic foods, amazing cheese, tasting and demonstrations everywhere, and all in the main square! But more frivolity is to be had, 6 o'clock happens... It is time for a street party...
The live bands (most of whom are obviously fuelled with the odd Citrus Sundowner or Morello Fizz from demijohn's much loved cocktail selection) play on the steps of the station. Everybody, happy due to eating Awesome and drinking Fabulous all day, is rocking in the street.
We shut off our bottling section of the stand and like Tom Cruise and Bryan Brown in Cocktail (although the bottles are getting thrown in a stylish and smooth way, I cannot say the same for the catching!) the bar comes into its own, acting like the servant of Bacchus, boosting the party to the extreme!

The Big Feastival

Posted in The Demijohn News Events Blog , by Mark Perkins, on 2nd September 2013

Sunset Over The Big FeastivalAnyone who is familiar with the more alcoholic side of Demijohn's beautiful produce (which is affectionately known as "The Alcoholic Sweet Shop of Joy!") will know how well it all goes down as an after dinner tipple, with desert, in a cocktail at lunch time, with fish, meat, cheese... the list goes on...

Those of you with a more creative mind, will know that to help unlock the inner yearnings of your artistic soul, the key is a little Bramble Scotch Whisky Liqueur or Morello Cherry Brandy Liqueur...

So when invited to this years 'Big Feastival' in Oxfordshire, where there was fantastic food, and of course, live music - we jumped at the chance!

Fuelling artists like Ciaran Jeremiah from The Feeling, and meeting an amazing range of individuals - We had a lady, so thrilled with our product, not only did she buy some for herself, the next day, she smuggled in her own Limoncello for myself and Darren (The new manager of the up and coming, ever so exciting, Oxford shop) to taste! - it is a very hard life I lead! Next year, demijohn cocktails will be free flowing and plentiful, as well as being able to buy yourself a bottle!Mark and Ciaran Jeremiah

The Wild Wild West ... Wales

Posted in The Demijohn News Events Blog , by Mark Perkins, on 19th August 2013

Pembrokeshire County Show

Morello Cherry Brandy Liqueur

In the sleepy, calm and beautiful county of Pembrokeshire in South Wales, I was looking forward to a slightly more laid back show. The main motive for which was I wanted to buy a hat, you know; the type of all weather, no-nonsense, ‘make you like John Wayne’ Hat! I was all set up in plenty of time, I had met me lovely neighbours from ‘Pembrokeshire Produce’, scouted out several hats in the running for my new head accessory… then the doors opened!

My Uncle, who lives locally, suddenly (as well as being my host for the 3 days) became the animated salesman. Handing out tasters as if they were the miracle cure, feeling as though everyone not only should want the beautiful Gooseberry Gin, but needed it… and lots of it too!

Orders were flying in, my wrapping was not fast enough, and beads of perspiration started to form, but then, suddenly, back up arrived. It came in the form of three wonderful, energetic and vibrant lady friends of my Uncle (the regular welsh Casanova), passing tasters this way and that, ensuring anyone in the vicinity had tried at least one liqueur. They were more jolly, less lethal and more moral forms of Demijohn’s very own crusaders. If you were not into alcohol, that was OK, but you would have to try the Elderflower Vinegar (as a result, this sold out on day 2)!

We even got involved with the most wonderful sisters selling Chocolate, hand made by them (Oh Sugarplum), and of course, in regular Demijohn style, just had to try every liqueur with every chocolate, in every combination… Morello Cherry Brandy and Dark chocolate Truffle… Enough said!!!

Oh… and I never got my hat!

More than flowers at RHS Tatton Park

Posted in The Demijohn News Events Blog , by Mark Perkins, on 29th July 2013

Tiggy and Mark in action on the Demijohn stand, watch out! When you have the perfect garden - all of your Bluebeard Shrubs are perfectly pruned, your Carolina Allspice is, as it does every year, putting your neighbour's generic (and if I may say so slightly browned) Hydrangeas, to shame; there is not one weed in sight and the pressure washer has been out so many times you have had to buy a new patio, as you washed the old one away (not to mention buying that little pressure washer to clean the bigger pressure washer) - the only thing left to do is enjoy it for the remainder of the summer, with a glass of sensational liqueur, a hammock and (if you have my complexion) 5 litres of suntan cream.

That is an image that screams 'I win at life'. It is a oil painting that people look at and say 'that guy has it down', a photograph in a large album that everyone pauses that extra second to suspend their disbelief and be there with you.

So when you go back to work after your short break in the Eden you have created - having sipped at ice cold Gooseberry Gin Liqueur; invited your friends around for champagne with their choice of Morello Cherry Brandy Liqueur, Organic Rhubarb Vodka or Blackcurrant Gin dropped into it; even having some Bramble Scotch Whisky Liqueur around that chiminea you shouldn't have bought, but you did, with your wife at midnight - your boss will say 'your three weeks behind on that report, also, finish this for me whilst I go and have dinner with an important client', you will smile and say 'OK', because you will be thinking...

'I win'!

Always a great day at the CLA

Posted in The Demijohn News Events Blog , by Mark Perkins, on 22nd July 2013

Are you up for the Demijohn Challenge? And we were back! Replaced by the horizontal rain, the sea of mud and dampened spirits; were smiles and blue sky as far as the eye could see! And this year we had brought out the big guns (not just Andrew from the Edinburgh Shop) but our increasingly popular cocktail bar!

Midsummer Muddles, Citrus Sundowners and yes, once again the infamous Bloody Pirate Cocktails were flying off in every direction as though there was a gin/vodka shortage scare.

We were personally fuelling the brilliant reggae band with our cocktails of musical fusion, these guys never sounded so phenomenal (well, at least their Seville Orange Gin perception was such).

Whilst the banter was free flowing and spirits high there was only one thing left that anyone with the courage, capacity and sheer determination could try... the Demijohn Challenge!!! Many modern day knights took the challenge, there were few who succeeded. 'What is this challenge?' I hear you ask, well, I shall tell you...

Hard work, but isn't she doing well! The Demijohn Challenge, who's record of 2 minutes and 30 seconds is still unbeaten by the hero and Yorkshire King that is Adam Palmer from Yorkshire Rapeseed Oil, is where you hold two filled 5 litre containers in each hand with arms out stretched.

'Easy' I hear you say! Well, you will just have to try it for yourselves. The woman's challenge, set by the horse vaulting, gymnastic phenomenon that is Hatty from the Spencerfield Spirit company is 1:30. Anyone who beats the record at a show gets a free cocktail, and a SHED load of respect!

So... Knights of the gin infused realm of joy... We will see you all at our next show!

Get ready for the CLA Game Fair 2013

Posted in Events Blog , by Mark Perkins, on 15th July 2013

Wigeon relaxing at the Demijohn Cocktail Bar!Two years since our frivolities at the CLA game fair at Blenheim palace and the memory of it is still as crystal clear as a bottle of our 50% Demijohnnie Gin!

This game fair, two years ago, was shortly after the momentous occasion that myself and the legend that is Tim Fox in the York shop invented our best selling cocktail; the Bloody Pirate! Something so simple (Raspberry Vodka Liqueur mixed with the Spiced Rum Liqueur) was selling faster than a firework on a roller skate and this was no different when we brought it to the CLA game fair!

At the CLA, once the queues have vanished, the selling dies down, the sun has slipped away, you would think it was the end of the day... But no! This is when the exhibitors come out to play!

Armed with a bottle of Bloody Pirate, sat around a camp fire, where the food is delicious and the champagne and banter are both bubbling with viscosity, a new drink was born... The Bloody Pirate 'happened' to find itself mixed with the champagne, such things are inevitable and no name could be found for this delightfully downable drink.

It was not until the following morning, when the Demijohn Staff were not the only exhibitors blinking in the sunlight, speaking with a rasp harshness of tone, in a happy but fuzzy haze, that the drink was aptly re-named the 'Bloody Disaster'!

The Norfolk Delights

Posted in Events Blog , by Mark Perkins, on 3rd July 2013

Spiced Rum Liqueur 20%In the ever-turning energetic whirlpool of life that is Demijohn's Events Manager, you learn very quickly to go where the current takes you!

Such was our first insight into the wonderful Royal Norfolk Show. After a lovely phone call at midday, the day before the show, I found myself locked, loaded and shooting down the M6 like a 70mph alcoholic laser gun by 1pm. I got a lovely reception from the organisers on arrival and from this moment on, it would only get better...

Throughout the show, being fuelled by handmade fudge, ice-cream and fantastic banter from the stalls either side of me, it all went like a well oiled Rolls Royce engine. The eureka moment when the beautiful Spiced Rum Liqueur 20% was enjoyed alongside rum and raisin ice-cream was a particular high point... no wonder we had sold out of it by 10 am on the second day!

There were even people buying our Spiced Rum Liqueur to make their own homemade ice-cream when they got home, definitely a good plan for getting into the summery holiday mood...

The Royal Norfolk Show is a show I thoroughly enjoyed and through meeting so many wonderful and lovely people, I have no doubt that we will be back again!

Cheshire County Show - A winning smile!

Posted in Events Blog , by Mark Perkins, on 28th June 2013

Mark with his winning smile! What a show this turned out to be! Having just come from the wonderfully busy BBC Good Food Show in Birmingham our stock had taken a hit as people could not get enough of our brand new batch of Gooseberry Gin Liqueur 17%...mmm!

The courier had brought in more stock (I have taken to calling the courier Gimli - the dwarf from lord of the rings - because he is ever so reliable and although he is ultimately a hero in my life, he is always slower than you want him to be) and the next thing I know I was late entering the show ground and had recruited the aid of a sweet little old lady on a mobility scooter to help carry some of the product across the show ground, an absolute angel on wheels - and as it turns out, a rather big whisky fan!

As this was Demijohn's first time at the Cheshire County Show, it was brilliant to meet so many new people and introduce them to the concept of our delightfully tasty ways; I could not even resist enticing the stand opposite (selling Ginger Beer), to try drinking it with our Organic Rhubarb Vodka Liqueur 20.5%, what a success amongst exhibitors and customers alike.

When I thought this show could not get any more fun, I was approached and presented with a second place rosette for best looking ... Stall! Having had a little round of applause and a celebration dance with anyone willing to join in (3 people and an excitable dog) I went on to have a brilliant show.

I look forward to seeing some of you lovely people again at the RHS Flower Show in Tatton park (25-28 July) - don't forget those refills!

Team Demijohn go Elderflower Picking in YorkshireSummer brings so many things to different people; holidays, sun, beaches, alfresco dining, an ice cold cocktail on the riverside....

For me for the past 3 years, since working at demijohn in York, Summer brings with it the annual Demijohn elderflower pick!

Over the next couple of weeks the Demijohn Team and anyone else who is crazy enough, will be taking to the Yorkshire and Scottish hedgerows to gather as much elderflower as we can for our beautiful Elderflower Vinegar: so sweet you can put it on ice cream; so refreshing you can drink it with sparkling water; and so fresh it livens up the most boring of salads!

The farm we pick on is the same land that makes our Yorkshire Lemon Rapeseed Oil and the two go fantastically in one of our most popular salad dressing combinations to date, in the Elderflower Vinegar and Lemon Oil Ball.

If you would be interested in joining us either this year or in the future, drop us an email!

BBC Good Food Summer Show 12-16 June 2013

Posted in The Demijohn News Events Blog , by Angus Ferguson, on 29th May 2013

Our York Shop Team in high spirits! At last the sun is shining but crumbs, it has taken its time to come out! The Summer BBC Good Food Show is a spectacular event at which all the nice things in life come under one roof. It combines a rather large Food Festival, with a plethora of Garden and Lifestyle amusements thrown in.

Go on, give it a Goo!

Because the sun will be out, we will be launching our new Gooseberry Gin Liqueur 17% at the show. It is a delicious Summery drink which can be drunk either over ice or used to make a delightful Gooseberry G & T, a cocktail we have called Evoque. So for those of you who are coming to the show and yet to try it then please come and see us on Stand F502 in Hall 20 of the gigantic Birmingham NEC.

Leyburn Food and Drink Festival 4-6 May 2013

Posted in The Demijohn News Events Blog , by Angus Ferguson, on 14th March 2013

Angus on the mobile Demijohn Cocktail BarWe wil be exhibiting at our first event of the year, the fantastic Leyburn Food & Drink Festival again between Sat 4th and Mon 6th May 2013. For those who have never witnessed this tremendous event I urge you to come.

Imagine this....

A large field, set amongst the rolling green hills of the beautiful North Yorkshire Dales. In that field are placed a few white tents, some merry go rounds for the children and a band stand. In those tents however are some of the finest food and drink exhibitors Britain has to offer. In the evening after a hard days sampling, chatting and selling, we retire to one of the many country pubs for a few ales and supper. Only in the Dales do locals talk about religion and politics on first meeting in the pub. They get away with it because they are "reet" friendly.

Just brilliant....

We wait all year for this event to happen, to see the thousands that come out of the hills for it, as it is so much fun. Who would have thought that it all started out of tragedy? The event was founded at the end of the last foot and mouth outbreak in an attempt to restart a flagging local economy, just brilliant. I hope we will see you there!
