Inside Demijohn's new Buchanan Galleries Store

Clearly bucking the trend for retail start-ups is Scottish liquid deli Demijohn who this week opened a new pop-up in Glasgow’s main shopping centre, Buchanan Galleries. Such is the demand for their artisan liqueurs, spirits, whiskies, oils and vinegars, especially in the run-up to Christmas, that they decided to expand with this new shop.

Stephanie Fraser, Chief Exec of Bobath Scotland, one of Demijohn’s chosen charities, will cut the raffia on 12 Oct to officially declare the shop open.

With a very visual and inviting shop décor, complete with large glass demijohns perched on beech shelves which come from ancient fallen beech trees from Fife, the Demijohn pop up is the perfect place to source innovative and delicious Christmas gifts. With their ethos of encouraging customers to try before buying, this shop will be a real pick-me-up for weary shoppers in the centre of Glasgow.

Going to Demijohn is to most adults what walking into a sweet shop is to children – shelves of delicious tasting and sounding drinks of colours and strengths from Bramble Whisky Liqueur to Seville Orange Gin, Rhubarb Vodka to Butterscotch Cream Liqueur. With staff knowledgeable and passionate about the products, there is no end of cocktails, drinks and recipes that can be made using Demijohn’s products. Such is their passion that at times they head to the hedgerows to collect sloes for the Sloe Gin, elderflowers for Elderflower Vinegar and brambles for Bramble Scotch Whisky Liqueur.

Demijohn Managing Director Angus Ferguson said: “All we hear in the press is how challenging the state of retailing is at the moment. At Demijohn we are always optimistic and building on our current healthy sales from our shops on Byres Rd, Edinburgh and York, this pop-up is the perfect way to get into the city centre in the pre-Christmas rush, and allow those shoppers from other parts of Glasgow and beyond to come and enjoy the Demijohn experience.

“So often customers are looking for something different and a bit quirky for Christmas, and this is exactly what we offer. With a wide selection of re-fillable bottles, customers choose the contents of the liquid (after tasting naturally!) and then can even have a personalised message added for free. This traditional, friendly method of shopping is appealing to so many who are tired of the faceless 21st century retailing.”

Kathy Murdoch, centre manager at Buchanan Galleries, said: “We really like Demijohn’s ethos of combining bespoke products with a great customer experience and I’m sure they’ll be a big hit with customers looking for something a little different this Christmas”.

This month Demijohn is also opening a stand alone counter in Loch Leven’s Larder Farm Shop in Fife, in another expansion of the business.

Demijohn is located in Unit 8 / L4 on the first floor of the Buchanan Galleries and is open 10am to 7pm daily, with late opening on Thursday until 8pm.

Angus and Eilidh shaking up a Burghley Bounder Cocktail at Burghley Horse Trials 2018!

We love to experiment with new tastes and sometimes cocktail inspiration strikes unexpectedly, often as a result of a new product arriving at a particular moment. And so was the case with the creation of this fantastically fresh and drinkable Burghley Bounder Cocktail, created during the 2018 Burghley International Horse Trials.

Our insanely popular Seville Orange Gin was combined with our zingy Lime & Chilli Cordial, some very fine Red Gum Honey from our Scottish friend Shamus Ogilvy at Necta & Hive and some fresh lime juice to create a wickedly delicious cocktail that might even give a rider enough courage to bound their horse around the famously tricky Burghley cross country course....well almost!!

Ingredients

Preparation

To avoid freezing the honey, muddle the honey with the Seville Orange Gin, Lime & Chilli Cordial and fresh lime juice in a cocktail shaker without any ice until all the honey dissolves. Then add crushed ice and the remainder of your squeezed lime fruit chopped into smaller chunks. Shake hard and pour complete contents into suitable sized tumbler or rocks glass. Sip slowly and get ready to leap like a Thoroughbred!

How do I buy the drinks for this cocktail?

Please choose an apppropriately sized bottle of Seville Orange Gin 26% and Lime & Chilli Cordial from our Cordial range.

Anything else I should know?

Red Gum honey is our preferred ingredient for the Burghley Bounder Cocktail due to is delicious concentrated molasses taste. However, another good honey could of course be used.

Here at Demijohn we have a gin for all seasons and gin cocktails for any weather. As Scotland has been roasting under 28 degrees several times this week, the temptation to reach for a cooling sip of Gin and Tonic as the evening approaches is beckoning. So often thought of as winter warmers even our darker fruity favourites such as Sloe Gin and Damson Gin can dress up in their summer finery in some of these spectacular cocktail recipes.

Slow Down and Relax

If, like I do, you find this glorious heat makes you just a tad unproductive, embrace the enforced slow down with a Demijohn Wibble Cocktail, one of our many gin cocktails: a striking combination of Sloe Gin, Demijohnnie Gin, Grapefruit juice and lemon juice, with the tiniest dash of Bramble Scotch Whisky Liqueur.

A Fruity Summer Refresher

For a fruity summer refresher why not perk yourself up with our delightful Gooseberry Gin Liqueur. With the sharpness of that piquant little fruit it is delicious as a little snifter over ice or for a longer cooling quencher make it into an Evoque Cocktail, aka Gooseberry Gin and Tonic.

The Evoque Cocktail, aka Gooseberry Gin and Tonic

Sparkle and Shimmer

To make your day sparkle and shimmer why not transform your champagne, prosecco, cremant or cava with a dash of Blackcurrant Gin to make a Blackcurrant Bellini Cocktail. A tart and vitamin c packed Kir!

Smooth and Sophisticated

Feeling smooth and sophisticated. Then Celebrate your inner 007 with a Demijohn Classic Dry Martini Cocktail using Demijohnnie Gin, Dry British Vermouth together with some vodka, lemon and ice.

Zingingly Fresh Aperitifs

Don't allow yourself to become a damsel in distress. Calm that frenzy by sipping on a refreshing Distressed Damson Cocktail. Muddle some crushed blueberries with lime juice, ice, and Damson Gin to create this zingingly fresh aperitif.

At the End of the Day

The Citrus Sundowner Cocktail

At the end of the day let's appreciate our wonderful maritime climate bathing in whatever weather it has chosen to throw at us. Best of all to do this while enjoying a Citrus Sundowner Cocktail in the company of friends and family. This spectacularly successful cocktail created for a great friend of ours is a delicious combination of Seville Orange Gin, Lime Vodka Liqueur and Ginger Wine topped up with Walter Gregor's tonic water.

A Bientot and I'm off to raise a glass to the wide variety of Gins we delight in at Demijohn – Chin Gin!

How to make 7 Healthy Salad Dressing Recipes

Elderflower Vinegar and Lemon Oil Ball

We have over the years sourced some of the finest olive oilsinfused oils and balsamic vinegars that combine in salad recipes to create irresistible salad dressing recipes. From a simple pasta salad to the more complex bean salad recipe, these healthy salad recipes are easy to make and delicious to taste.

We currently have 7 first class edible oils on tap, including 3 Single Estate Extra Virgin Olive Oils, a Scottish Rapeseed Oil and 3 infused Rapeseed Oils. With our oils you can make many healthy salad dressing recipes. These are our 7 favourite salad recipes using our oils, to give you a wonderful week of Summer salads:

Monday's Classic Leafy Green Salad

Using our Villa Montalbano Extra Virgin Olive Oil from Tuscany. Gather a great bundle of fresh, mixed green salad leaves, from your garden if you are lucky enough to grow some. Once washed and prepared, place and mix together in your largest bowl for effect.

Top tip! When choosing your salad leaves, make sure you balance the flavour of those leaves to your olive oil and personal taste. We like a really strong salad, to excite the tastes buds and make our guests cough! If you like a mild salad use a milder dressing so that your food is in balance.

In this case we are going to the strong side of the salad spectrum with rocket, watercress and basil bulked out with red chard and a cheaper leaf such as gourmet medley. The result should be a nice colourful bowl of leaves. When dressing a salad with vinegar and oil, always adjust for salt and pepper first, drizzle the vinegar and wash through with your olive oil. In this case use our strong flavoured fruity Tayberry Vinegar and then wash through with our velvety smooth Villa Montalbano Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

Tuesday's Pea and Mint Salad

Pea and Mint Salad

Using our Kabbadates Extra Virgin Olive Oil from Corfu. To make this simple Pea and Mint Salad use roughly 1/4 kg of fresh garden peas. Remove the peas from their pods and add to a bowl with fresh mint, a splash of Kabbadates Extra Virgin Olive Oil and a splash of Apple Vinegar. Serve along with a light lunch or use as a starter with some good bread.

Wednesday's Asparagus Salad

Using our Monterosa Extra Virgin Olive Oil from Portugal. Clean and prepare a suitable quantity of asparagus spears rolled in olive oil, and fry hard in either a very hot frying pan or on BBQ until slightly scorched. Place in a cold dish and drizzle a generous amount of Monterosa Extra Virgin Olive Oil over the spears. Finally crack some sea salt over the spear prior to serving with cold meats.

Thursday's Fiery Dragon Potato Salad

Using our Chilli Rapeseed Oil from Yorkshire. Chop a handlful of clean potatoes into small cubes and place onto a baking tray. Add some rough chopped garlic, with their husks removed. Drizzle a liberal amount of Chilli Rapeseed Oil over the potatoes and garlic and stir to ensure a good coating of oil over both. Finally crack some sea salt over the whole tray and then place in a pre-heated over at 180 degrees C for about 20 minutes. Every 5 minutes, lift out the tray and turn the potatoes, applying a little more salt, until all the potatoes have turned a crispy brown colour. Remove tray and serve either hot or cold with homemade Mayonnaise.

Friday's Quick Cous Cous Salad

Using our Rapeseed Oil from Perthshire. Prepare a suitable quantity of Cous Cous and allow to cool slightly in a mixing bowl. Chop peppers, olives, cucumber and add all to the bowl with a generous amount of Perthshire Rapeseed Oil and a dash of Gooseberry Vinegar. Adjust with salt and pepper to taste.

Saturday's Wildflower and Tomato Caprese Salad

Using our Lemon Rapeseed Oil from Yorkshire. As a guide you will need roughly one large vine ripened tomato and about half a 450g fresh mozzarella per person. Cut 5mm slices of both tomato and cheese and arrange on a salad platter with the tomatoes on the bottom over laid with the fresh mozzarella slices. Season with cracked sea salt and pepper prior to scattering a handful of fresh basil leaves and wild Wood Sorrel flowers (yellow, pink or white) over the plate. Finally dress the whole dish with a healthy amount of our Elderflower Vinegar and Lemon Oil, which we also call Elderflower Vinaigrette. The result is belissimo!

Sunday's Lazy Pasta Salad

Using our White Truffle Oil from Perthshire. Are you like us and always have a small bowl of left over cooked pasta in the fridge from a meal earlier in the week? Annoying isn't it! This is a great recipe idea to use up spare cold pasta so it does not go to waste. If the pasta is very fresh and still soft you might be able to simply add the ingredients directly to it. If not then throw the pasta once again briefly into boiling water and strain to revitalise it. Then add chopped chunks of salami or chorizo, peppers of various colours, halved raw button mushrooms and chunks of raw garlic. Drizzle a liberal dose of Truffle Oil and a splash of Gooseberry Vinegar and stir well together. Add cracked sea salt and pepper to taste. Serve with a generous amount of coarse grated Parmesan Cheese.

We hope you enjoy these delicious recipes as much as we did when creating them. If it has unleashed a creative chef within you and you have thought up additional healthy salad recipes using our oils and vinegars, we would love you to share them with us. So please do contact us with any recipe ideas or suggestions.

In the meantime, happy munching!

Angus

Handmade personalised wedding favours

What would make your wedding guests smile just a little more on your special day? It would have to be the sight of Demijohn’s delicious artisan alcoholic personalised wedding favours, which not only provide a great memorable gift but also give a splash of colour to the wedding table.

Gone are the days of sugared almonds or crass gifts, your wedding guests will love these wedding favours – for a summery theme a small bottle of Scottish Raspberry Vodka is ideal or for the romantics Traditional Mead is the drink of love. If you’d prefer a very Scottish gift, Bramble Scotch Whisky Liqueur is popular or to add a touch of spice to the day opt for Spiced Rum Liqueur.

What makes these wedding favours particularly personal is each bottle can have a message on it or attached to it. The bride and groom choose the size and shape of the glass bottle (from miniature 40ml up to bigger 100ml bottles – or even larger) and then can choose one of over 60 delicious artisan liqueurs, whiskies, spirits or fruit vinegars to go inside.

The range of Demijohn products is huge and each liquid is more wonderful than the last. The favourites for wedding favours are Raspberry Vodka Liqueur, Damson Gin Liqueur, Bramble Scotch Whisky Liqueur, Toffee Whisky Liqueur, Traditional Mead or Spiced Rum Liqueur and all can be drunk on their own or with a mixer or in a cocktail. For those wanting something non-alcoholic there are natural cordials or fruit vinegars, which are delicious when mixed with sparkling water.

Our miniature 40ml apotheker bottles make beautiful wedding favours

The bottles are perhaps part of the love of these wedding favours as they can either be small round or larger wiggly Fila bottles or even much larger heart-shaped bottles. And guests can then return to a Demijohn shop and have it refilled.

Demijohn Owner Angus Ferguson says: “Our personalised wedding favours have grown to be hugely popular with weddings at anytime of the year, especially in the Spring and early Summer. Our understanding that each wedding is unique and special, allows us to be a great help when making choices about our beautiful, understated handmade drinks for wedding guests and table centre pieces. Our offer of adding a tasteful handwritten name, or details of the Bride and Groom and wedding date, to each bottle can really add to the magic of a table place setting. We believe we can offer some of the most original, personalised wedding favours around.”

Prices start from £4.32/bottle with discounts for larger orders. So make sure you contact Demijohn to discuss your wedding favours now before the summer rush!

Father's Gold; a great idea for a whisky loving Father

Spoil your Dad with liquid gold on Father’s Day with a present so rare and delicious that he can’t fail to enjoy it. Liquid deli Demijohn has managed to acquire a very special, cask strength, 8 year old Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky 59.8%, which it is releasing specially for Father’s Day.

Father’s Gold, as a 700ml bottle of this amber liquid has been dubbed, is a particularly rare Islay malt whisky because of the limited production. At 59.8% proof it is certainly strong and has been deliberately bottled at cask strength, which is part of its rarity and appeal.

It has a definite peaty note to taste and a wonderful smoky hint at the finish that can be likened to burnt grass or smoked meats. It is this unique taste that has delighted the palates of whisky connoisseurs and everyday drinkers alike.

As an added extra Demijohn is able to add a personal message for free on every bottle so you can tell your father how special he is.

Demijohn’s Angus Ferguson adds: “As a proud Father of 3 children myself I understand how wonderful it can be to receive a special present on Father’s Day. Our Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky is very popular at Demijohn with Islay Malt Whisky lovers. If your Dad is one of these, he is going to really love our Father's Gold bottle.

The Royal Rhubarb and Ginger Cosmopolitan Cocktail

We have created the Royal Rhubarb and Ginger Cosmopolitan to celebrate the magnificent Royal Wedding between Prince Harry and Ms. Meghan Markle on 19 May 2018 at St. George's Chapel, Windsor.

This would be a deliciously fun cocktail to drink at any wedding reception, especially a Royal Wedding reception. This drink champions the union of an American classic with home grown British rhubarb and a touch of ginger, to give it some heat!

Ingredients

Preparation

Fill a Champagne Coupe or Martini glass with ice to cool the glass. Add your ingredients along with lots of ice to your cocktail shaker. Shake the mixture hard for around 10 to 15 seconds.

Remove all ice from the glass and strain the drinks from the shaker into the glass. Decorate with a small stem of rhubarb.

To make a rhubarb purée, stew fresh rhubarb stems for about 5 minutes and sweeten generously with sugar. Liquidize the stewed rhubarb with a blender into a smooth paste. Chill for an hour prior to adding the fruit purée to the cocktail shaker.

How do I buy the drinks for this cocktail?

The contents include our deliciously sunshine filled Limoncello Liqueur 32%, warming Toffee Whisky Liqueur 20%, indulgent Morello Cherry Brandy Liqueur 17%, our founding classic Raspberry Vodka Liqueur 22%, delightfully marmalady Seville Orange Gin 26% and the best of winter spices in our Spiced Rum Liqueur 20%. Contents can be varied by request, prices may vary if contents are altered.

12 Apothekers of Christmas

If the comforts of the toasty winter fire might cause the contents of this set to simply evaporate too swiftly why not plump for the 12 Apothekers of Christmas Set. This set includes 12 apotheker 40ml bottles each supplied with raffia hanging loop and a greater selection of our unique handmade drinks. Your Christmas tree or wreaths will simply look fabulous when decorated with this varied selection.

To this end Demijohn have launched the most stunning presentation boxes, which are filled with delicious liqueurs and spirits, and all at different price points to meet your corporate Christmas gifts needs for those who enjoy the finer things in life.

The added benefit of the Demijohn gifts is that personal messages can be added on the bottles for free or for an additional fee, an engraving of choice, such as the company logo, can be marked in the actual wood.

The Demijohn boxes are like all Demijohn products – lots of different sizes, shapes and contents so you can make a mass order and satisfy everyone from the office staff to the board directors.

The Liqueur TowerFor those in high positions there is the upright Liqueur Tower (with oak gift box) which holds 3 stackable x 250ml Impilabile bottles in a stunning box. The contents of the bottles can be chosen from any of the Demijohn products, but Demijohn recommend the lovely combination of Seville Orange Gin, Rhubarb Vodka and Bramble Scotch Whisky Liqueur as a sophisticated trio. Made in Worcestershire from sloes collected from the hedgerows, often by the Demijohn team who shut up shop to do a day of foraging, this is a traditional liqueur with an added bitter taste making it ideal as a fresh air sharpener, an after dinner digestif or even in cocktails. But hurry as stocks of this product are limited given its seasonal nature. Priced at £62.95.

The Liqueur Gift BoxFor those that went the extra mile this year, The Liqueur Gift Box is ideal. Hand created oak boxes hold 6 x 100ml bottles of the best of Demijohn’s liqueurs, including Rhubarb Vodka Liqueur, Seville Orange Gin, Spiced Rum, Sloe Gin, Morello Cherry Brandy and Bramble Scotch Whisky Liqueur. Of course, if you’d rather choose your own liqueurs then that is also possible. Priced at £90.55.

Mini Christmas StackerFor team players the Mini Christmas Stacker is perfect, priced at just £27.60. Three Mystic 100ml bottles are filled with warming Christmas drinks – Sloe Gin, Spiced Rum Liqueur and Morello Cherry Brandy.

Our new Damson Vinegar is ready to try...

Our new Damson Vinegar in an Impilabile 250ml Base bottleIf May was for Martinis, June is for celebrating the arrival of Summer and the eating of many salads! To make your salads even more exciting we have added a super fruity new Damson Vinegar to our range of oils and dressings.

Our Damson Vinegar is made by infusing a rare variety of Damson, called the Shropshire Prune, in a White Wine Vinegar. The result is a beautifully rich tasting Damson Vinegar which is sweet but sharp. Use it to dress your salads with a little of our Extra Virgin Olive Oil, or add it to your cooking in the place of a Balsamic Vinegar and witness a little magic.

Recipe for your Weekend

Scorched Asparagus Spears on the BBQIf you are planning a BBQ this weekend we recommend you try our Scorched Asparagus Spears recipe. British Asparagus is still in season and it is a super simple treat to make. As a variation to our Traditional Balsamic Vinegar ingredient, try using either our new Damson Vinegar, Tayberry Vinegar or Blackcurrant Vinegar instead.

Our Tayberry Vinegar is a Winner!

As we seem be on a vinegar roll this week, it would be wrong not to mention that our Tayberry Vinegar, which we launched last year, just happened to win Best Retail Product in the recent Scotland Food & Drink Excellence Awards. Voila!

Thankyou for reading and we look forward to seeing you somewhere soon.

Yours,

   Angus

May is for Martinis!

Click for 4 new Martini cocktail recipes. Easy to make and wonderful to sip!May is the most wonderful month where nature seems to give itself a whopping great shake and come alive. Opulent colours mix with the deafening noise of the birds and bees, it is simply superb is it not? In the midst of this excitement, Frances and I decided to experiment with our new Dry British Vermouth, just to see if we could remember how to make a Classic Dry Martini and develop some new Martini cocktail recipes.

Our new Dry British Vermouth is at the heart of our Martini experiments. It is a unique and complicated drink, handmade just North of Edinburgh. A British White Wine delicately infused with 24 herbs including Wermod, produces a simply magical ingredient for any Martini Cocktail or gentle aperatif when mixed long with soda, ice and lemon.

Like the natural World around us, not only did we giving ourselves a whopping great Spring shake, but we discovered just how simple to make and pleasurable the Classic Dry Martini cocktail can be. Top of our new creations was our Sloe Gin Martini, followed closely by our Morello Martini and Raspberry Vodka Martini. What we really discovered is that May is for Martinis. What that means for June is hard to tell....!

Make it a Sloe Gin

Ball of Sloe GinSloe season has arrived and with it the need to harvest Sloe berries from rather prickly bushes. Sloe Gin is one of the classic drinks of the British Countryside. With its rich, port like taste Sloe Gin can make a fabulous after dinner drink or something with which to fill your hipflask.

The stakes are high to make a first class drink each year, and as our Sloe Gin won the World Sloe Gin Championships for the last two years we have quite a reputation to uphold. So last week some of our enthusiastic Demijohn Staff marched on the hedgerows of Galloway to pick a little of the elusive Sloe for our 2017 batch of Sloe Gin. Our haul was good, and luckily so was the weather and the lunch!

You may make your own Sloe Gin, you may have friends or relatives who make their own. Everyone involved in Sloe Gin's annual production understands the need to keep the location of their precious Sloe berries close to one's chest. They also understand that only time will assure you of a drink with a perfectly deep flavour similar to a vintage port.

After at least 10 months of maturing in a London Gin, Demijohn Sloe Gin is nearly ready for drinking. Often we allow 12 months just to be sure. Sloe Gin is therefore aptly named. We recommend you come and have a sip before it is all gone.

Invite to a Pre-Christmas Tasting Evening

If you would like a chance to try our Sloe Gin first hand, among the many other delicious products we have on tap in our shops, then please sign up now for our special Pre-Christmas Tasting Evening. This event will be run simultaneously in our four shops, Edinburgh, Glasgow, York and Oxford on Wed 16th Nov 2016.

Team Demijohn Sloe Pick in Galloway on 18 Oct 2016The Tasting Evening will start promptly at 6.30pm with a cocktail and last for about an hour. Tasting Evenings are fun and relaxed and will allow you to try all of our new products and many more besides, giving you some great ideas for Christmas presents.

Hold you Horses for our new Summer cocktail! The bank holiday weekend is looming and Summer has officially started. Our Rhubarb Vodka Liqueur 20.5% is combined with our Grapefruitcello Liqueur 32% and Elderflower Vinegar to make an excitingly fresh long drink. So delightful is it to taste in fact, I think many forgot about the horse trials during that long, hot week in a field at Badminton!

Thankyou to all who came to see us at Badminton, we will be back in 2017 for sure! Thankyou also to those who took part in the Little Clarendon Street Party in Oxford last weekend which we sponsored. Despite a splot of rain, literally 1000's turned out to see the street in carnival spirit with magical music from 6 bands and 4 choirs. We cannot thank enough the hard work from everyone who made it happen and all the volunteer musicians. All our events for the year can be found on our Fairs and Events page.

Spring starts and ends with Rhubarb

Freshly cut, Spring rhubarbOh the joys of Spring weather. But what really tells us when Spring has started or ended for that matter? For me it is not the balmy weather, not the appearance and disappearance of many lurid yellow daffodils. It is not birds busily nesting and their chicks hatching, nor young lambs leaping. For me Spring is defined by our crop of rhubarb, crucial for our Rhubarb Vodka Liqueur.

New striking red stalks dart from a black soil in a confident upwards movement before enthusiastically bursting open with fabulously huge green leaves. Rhubarb's energy seems at odds with virtually all else growing in the garden, and then like daft sheep following each other to an open gate, the rest of nature follows. Before we know it, Summer is here, whoopee!

Rhubarb Vodka LiqueurAnd what a vegetable rhubarb is, cunning and clever. Despite its foul taste when raw and poisonous leaves, its healthy look compels most to treat it as a fruit. It can make delicious drinks like our Rhubarb Vodka Liqueur 20.5% or sumptuous puddings like our Rhubarb and Mead Pavlova or Rhubarb and Ginger Wine Trifles

Spring starts and ends with rhubarb, think about it.

'Tis the hour for Elderflower!

Elderflower Vinegar and Lemon Oil Ball - A fabulous recipe for saladsSummer is upon us at last, and with it brings a craving in our family for fresh green leaf Summer salads dressed with a little Elderflower Vinegar. Happily our Elderflower Vinegar is now back in stock, so it is time for you to wash out your empty Demijohn bottles and pop back in for a refill or place an order online.

A Tale of Two Picks

While it grew a little later than expected this year due to our cool British Spring, the flower of the Elder was blooming good in the North of England and slightly less so in Scotland.

A now annual event, we closed up some of the shops for two days at the end of June so that we could pick the precious elderflower heads for our delicious Elderflower Vinegar. I apologise now if you were caught out by such a sudden shop closure. However, without the gallant and voluntary efforts of our Staff there simply would be no Elderflower Vinegar and salads the Country over would be much less interesting as a result!

The York Elderflower pickers eating lunchThe Edinburgh picking team at the end of a long dayCat and Tom plunder the hedgerows of West Yorkshire

Team Demijohn has a history of picking things, and there is no doubt in my mind that it is the right thing to do. At the very least it gives us an excellent opportunity to eat a fabulous picnic lunch and try a few Demijohn Cocktails! At its best, it allows us to make a unique, naturally delicious product.

Once picked the flower heads are rushed north to Edinburgh, where Anne Sinclair and her team are ready to turn nature into our addictive Summer salad dressing.

Unique to us at Demijohn, our Elderflower Vinegar is always in limited supply. We would therefore recommend that you stock up now to prevent missing something very special indeed.

Competition Time

Events News

Thankyou to all those who came to see us at the Scottish Game Fair at Scone Palace in Perth at the start of the month. We had a very merry time of it and even broke into a dance at one point, not least because of the excellent bagpiping by Pipe Major Alistair Duthie!

Our next major event will be the superb CLA Game Fair, to be held this year at Harewood House near Leeds. We will be in the British Food Village and once again have our cocktail bar in action. The fair starts on Friday 30th July for 3 days.

Please view our Fairs and Events page for more details of where we will exhibit in 2015.

Have a wonderful weekend and we look forward to hearing from you again soon.

Best Father's Day Gifts

Posted in Flavours of the Month , by Frances Ferguson, on 19th May 2015

Best Father's Day Gifts - The Cheeseboard Drinks SelectionFather's Day is looming. It's a wonderful idea. I do agree with Grace Clayton and Sonora Dodd, the two women credited with instituting Father's Day, that these very fine chaps deserve a day of their own to be lauded and celebrated just as much as I approve of a bit of lauding and celebrating on Mothers Day. But I have a concern. The three people in my family for whom it is most difficult to choose Father's Day gifts are my husband, my father and my brother: each of whom are fathers and, I suspect, just as difficult to buy for as many a father in the land.

So I have tried to come up with the best Father Day gifts to suit several different types of chap. I'm sure your own Pop is a many faceted cove who cannot be categorized in such a trite manner but perhaps one of these might tickle one of his fancies?

  • The Gardener: For the Father most likely to be found in his vegetable patch, or rolling his lawn, or producing Begonias to dazzle the eye in his greenhouse, or even enjoying a moment in a deckchair I would recommend the Cubarb. A triumphant brew using the first stems of spring Rhubarb.
  • The Country Sportsman: Is your Father enternally loading up his labradors, donning his tweeds, and heading off into the hills in pursuit of the one that got away? Keep his spirits up with a Sporting Box, 4 liqueurs and 16 shot glasses to be produced with a flourish from a beautiful handmade Cherrywood case.
  • The Highlander: Never happier than when at one with his Caledonian roots and rolling a dram between his paws. I'd recommend the Father's Day Box Set. A fruitfilled Bramble Scotch Whisky Liqueur presented in a beautiful British handmade Cherrywood Box.
  • The Sailor: So, yours is the distant dot cresting the waves on the high seas, battling with his bilges or just sporting a blazer and a natty little cap? Help him wind down with the Father's Spiced Rum Ration.
  • The Chef: The serious skilleteer, the whipper upper of dinners of delight, will in turn be delighted with a bottle of Daddy's Sauce. No sharp, gloopy brown sludge this: but this100ml of magnificent 25 year old Tagliavini Aceto Balsamico di Modena is gourmet gold.
  • The Sentimentalist: Always brandishing that snap of your babyself in your Birthday suit, or delighting in his Dad dancing? Celebrate his cheesiness with the Cheeseboard Drinks Selection, a cherrywood tantalus enclosing 3 200ml bottles of Bramble Scotch Whisky Liqueur, Somerset Pomona 20% and Elderberry & Port Liqueur 17%.
  • The Eccentric: It's good to enjoy the individual characteristics of your Pa. Don't hide him away but toast his nuciferous qualities with a bottle of Walnut Liqueur 38%.
  • The Man of Leisure: A fellow who avoids the hubbub and likes to enjoy life at a leisurely speed could only be delighted with a Litre of Sloe Sherry.

Regardless of whether your Father fits one of these just a tiny bit, toast him with Father's Day gifts from Demijohn. Packed in our trademark burgundy tissue, and delivered to his door, should you so wish, show him just how much you appreciate your own paragon of Parenthood.

Good luck choosing, Frances

My Father's Day

Posted in Flavours of the Month , by Mark Perkins, on 5th May 2015

Father’s Day gift - Spiced Rum RationEvery year I have asked my Father what he wants as a Father’s Day gift. I get a similar reply every year, something along the lines of “just to know my family are well” or something equally cheesy like “nothing, but if you wanted to come and see me at some point this week, consider that my gift!”… I have been blessed with a phenomenal Dad.

Every year I try to find him the perfect Father’s Day gifts, making him things (like the flapjack that broke his teeth) and buying him things (like the latest shaving kit from the Bodyshop - which was much appreciated in the moment but I think still sits at the back of the bottom draw of the bathroom).

But this was before I managed to ween my Father, ever so successfully, into the world of whisky… which was the gateway drink to other Demijohn delights, the Whisky Mac made with our very own Demijohn Blend and our Ginger Wine… then onto the Seville Orange Gin, then the Morello Cherry Brandy, the Apple Eau de Vie, the Limoncello… and on it went until the day my Father has everything Demijohn has to offer!… but where do you go after that… I offered to refill them as his gift! Brilliant idea! I got it all cheaper as we were using the old bottles, I took my Dad in to ‘re-taste’ everything he wanted and it was a complete success! I had found something my Father actually liked!

But this tale is not one of complete triumph, thinking I had got it all sorted, I went into my Parents house to collect refills, only to find that my dear sweet Papa had gone to Oxford and filled them up himself!… so what do I get him this year?!?…

I’m going to have to be creative, write him a song, paint him a picture, or of course cook him some more tooth breaking flapjack… but one thing is for sure… the bottles will be empty by next year!

Best wishes, Mark

Tayberry Vinegar Arrives

Posted in Flavours of the Month , by Frances Ferguson, on 4th May 2015

Tayberry Vinegar and Olive Oil BallThe Tayberry is the jovial uncle of the Raspberry where the Loganberry is its sour maiden aunt.

Gender stereotypes apart the happy union of the raspberry and bramble that is found in the Tayberry lends itself to the newest addition to Demijohn's range of fruit vinegars with striking enthusiasm. We've been experimenting with our new Tayberry vinegar and it's proving to be a huge hit.

The only drawback is that we have to experiment quickly before the children scoff the lot. Their enthusiasm for salad knows no bounds now that they can slather it with a hefty slug of “the new gooey one” as it has been described.

“Out of the mouths of babes” they say, and it's true that the Tayberry vinegar does have a viscosity that is both delicious on its own and also responds well when combined with our Extra Virgin Olive Oil. A lighter vinegar will slip away when the oil is added to a salad and remain only as a tantalising puddle in the corner of the plate. The Tayberry Vinegar is robust enough to cling on and simply prepare the way for the addition of the Olive Oil.

I'm about to make a really big admission. It can also bring light to the darkness that descends whenever I have to consider the prospect of cooking game. I know it's ungrateful of me not to view these wild morsels with delight but I finding game, well, a bit gamey.

Now I can face those bagged and waiting Unidentified Flying Objects (a term coined by my brilliant Mother) armed with my trusty vinegar to slake the meat juices and transform their flavour from being a bit too reminiscent of the forest floor to a fanfare of fruitiness. Hurrah for Tayberry Vinegar!

Happy cooking, Frances.

Some interesting little facts about Easter

Posted in Flavours of the Month , by Frances Ferguson, on 30th March 2015

A food lovers Easter gift; our Olive Oil and Fruit Vinegar BallEaster is a festival I love for the eclecticism of its symbols, motifs and origins. There's the Christian resurrection of Christ, the Jewish Passover, and the pagan and panthestic celebration of the Spring.

I can assure you; as I shelter from this morning's violent snow shower; I really, really, appreciate the arrival of Spring and of course some well meant edible Easter gifts. So here are some interesting little facts about Easter and its traditions:

  1. Easter can occur on any date between March 23rd and April 26th and is closely related to the timing of the Spring Equinox. The actual date is set as the first Sunday after the first full moon that occurs after March 21, one of the first days of spring.
  2. The earliest known observance, Pasch, occurred between the second and fourth centuries. These celebrations commemorated both Jesus's death and his resurrection at once, whereas these two events have been split up between Good Friday and Easter Sunday today.
  3. Some argue that the word Easter comes from Eostur, the Norse word for spring, but it is also possible that it comes from Eostre, the name of an Anglo-Saxon goddess. A feast day in her honour was historically observed at the vernal equinox. She was often shown with a rabbit or hare, presumably because of the rabbit's famed fecundity.
  4. Alternatively an Anglo-Saxon legend tells of Eostre finding a wounded bird and transforming it into a hare, so that it could survive the Winter. The hare found it could lay eggs, so it decorated these each Spring and left them as offerings to the goddess.
  5. A Chocolate Orange with a Difference!Traditionally there were several foods which had to be given up during Lent, including eggs. But that did not stop eggs being laid so to preserve them, rather than waste them, the eggs would be boiled and saved for Easter weekend when Lent ended. This is why in several countries traditional Easter Sunday dishes feature boiled eggs.
  6. In 1290 King Edward I of England ordered 450 eggs to be gold-leafed and coloured as Easter gifts.
  7. The origin of the Easter Bunny bringing chocolate eggs started with German Lutherans. They said the ‘Easter Hare’ would decide if children had been well behaved enough to receive the chocolate eggs. The first known reference to the Easter Hare dates back to 1692.
  8. In the 17th Century, artificial eggs were made, using various materials, as these made excellent presents or gifts. These became popular and the first manufactured eggs started to appear, so it was only a matter of time before chocolate was used to create an Easter Egg. The first chocolate Eggs were solid and a paste was used made from ground roasted Cacao Bean. Germany and France produced these, but were quickly followed by the rest of Europe with the eggs being hollowed out.
  9. By the turn of the 19th century the discovery of the modern chocolate making process and improved mass manufacturing methods meant that the hollow moulded egg was the most popular gift for Easter, but it wasn't until the 1960s that this was established world wide.
  10. In 1883, the Russian Czar, Alexander, commissioned Fabergé to make a special Easter gift for his wife, the Empress Marie. This egg was actually not a real egg, as the outside shell was made of platinum and enamelled white, which opened to reveal a smaller gold egg. This in turn, opened to display a golden chicken and a jewelled replica of the Imperial crown. The Czarina was so delighted with this egg that further eggs were commissioned every Easter. In later years Nicholas II, Alexander's son, continued the custom and fifty seven eggs were made in all by Fabergé.
  11. A pregnant Roman woman carried an egg on their person to foretell the sex of their unborn children, while French brides stepped upon an egg before crossing the threshold of their new homes. Old Polish legends firmly attached the egg to the Easter celebrations and one folklore tells of the Virgin Mary giving eggs to the soldiers guarding the cross which held Jesus.
  12. The Easter Bonnet possibly arose from a Roman tradition of young women celebrating the arrival of spring by wearing wreaths of laurel and olive leaves, intertwined with flowers. In New York City, after Easter services in many of the large cathedrals, spontaneous celebrations ensued, with people walking down the streets in their Easter finery. With each passing year, the celebrations became a tradition known as "the Easter Parade". This drew increasing numbers of people, eventually numbering in the hundreds of thousands. Vying for attention, ladies displayed their elaborate spring millinery, which became a hallmark of the parade.
  13. The Easter basket shows roots in a Catholic custom. Baskets filled with breads, cheeses, hams, and other foods for Easter dinner were taken to mass Easter morning to be blessed. This evolved in time to baskets filled with chocolate eggs, jellybeans, toys, and stuffed bunnies for children left behind by the Easter Bunny.

Let's hope the sun comes out and Spring starts soon!

Frances

Easter Gifts with a Difference

Easter Gifts - Chocolate Orange Cream Liqueur EggI'm no opponent of the chocolate egg. Indeed I could be counted among its avid fans; but sometimes the serried rows of Minion and Mr Man themed packages in the supermarket don't really conjure up the right impression when trying to find really stylish Easter gift ideas for an adult. The homemade Easter gift is the non-pareil of stylish presents but again, despite all my attempts the end result never quite adds up to the intention.

I've admired the skill shown by my family and friends in transforming to assumed delight their initial recoil from the proffered sticky, slightly mysterious jar purporting to be homemade marmalade, or perhaps it's chutney, since the labelling happened sometime after the event and the contents don't look readily identifiable. Similar doubts accompany the beanbags for my lovely nieces made from my collection of unused shards of upholstery fabric. William Morris prints – just what every 8 year old yearns for – lucky ducks.

So, my point is, this year I might play it safe. Let the homemaking be done by one of those genii who make Demijohn's delicious wares. Penny Turnbull and Lindsey Anderson, from Fife, are just one such small farmer's market producer who starting making vinegars inspired by the produce of their own rambling garden and have now produced a wonderful Tayberry Vinegar for us. This rich dark fruity nectar is wonderful on salad, on cheese or on game. At the moment I'm consuming the stuff by the teaspoonful with sharp hard cheeses from Allsop and Walker. A Ying & Yang bottle set full of Tayberry Vinegar and some Villa Montalbano Extra Virgin Olive Oil would be the very zenith of sophisticated, handmade easter gifts for an adult.

For those adults in your life who just might feel short changed by not getting chocolate in their Easter Gift there is no more perfect Easter Gift than a Chocolate Orange with a difference. A delightful 500ml Sfera bottle filled with Chocolate Orange Cream Liqueur 17% from that clever sorcerer in Devon, Nigel Howard. A blend of dark chocolate, Devon cream, Somerset Apple Brandy and orange zest this is the very thing.

Move aside Easter Bunny, it's the Demijohn Easter Gift Basket from here-on!

Top 10 Mothers Day Facts

Demijohn has many great Mother's Day Gift Ideas

Just in case you were not exactly sure as to the origin of Mother’s Day, or why it is so important that you buy your Mother a really good Mother’s Day Gift, we have researched what we consider to be the top 10 facts about Mother’s Day:

  1. Anna Jarvis first held a memorial in America in 1905, the year her mother died, to honour her mother and continue her work.

  2. In the UK Mother's Day is celebrated on the same day as Mothering Sunday, the 4th Sunday in Lent. Mothering Sunday was traditionally a holiday on which to return to the Mother Church or main church or cathedral of the area.

  3. In 1920 Constance Smith published a booklet in the UK titled “The Revival of Mothering Sunday” in which she reconnected many of the pre-reformation traditions of Mothering Sunday with Mother's Day. However, Mother's Day was only adopted increasingly in the UK following its celebration by the large numbers of American and Canadian soldiers serving during the Second World War.

  4. In the Roman Catholic church Mother's day is also associated with revering the Virgin Mary.

  5. Mother's day is the 3rd most celebrated holiday in the world (be it on different dates) after Christmas and Easter.

  6. The date of the 4th Sunday in Lent is only shared by the UK, Ireland and Nigeria.

  7. A tradition of Mothering Sunday which was carried over into modern Mother's Day was the making of a simnel cake by young girls working “in service” to take home to their mothers on their day off. A simnel cake is a light fruit cake made with 2 layers of marzipan.

  8. Mother's day is the busiest day for telephone calls in the United States of America.

  9. In Australia it is traditional to give a chrysanthemum to your mother on Mother's day.

  10. Japan's imperial family trace their ancestry to Omikami Amaterasu, the mother of the world.

So if you have still yet to make a thoughtful purchase for your Mother on Mother’s Day on 15th March 2015 this year, then take a quick look at our Mother’s Day Gift ideas for some helpful and inspirational present ideas.

Happy shopping,

Frances

Mothers Day Gifts that She'll Really Love

Posted in Flavours of the Month , by Frances Ferguson, on 18th February 2015

Mothers Day GiftsRight, this year I really need to get my Ma a Mothers Day gift that she'll love. After all she needs a worthy reward for all those years of pulling on the mask of delight as she was handed the homemade mothers day gift in the form of a clay hippopotamus in bed sculpture and, even worse, the slightly chipped china shire horse found in an “antique” shop. I can't be sure that my taste has improved markedly in the sculptural department but I'm fairly confident that I'm onto a winner with the Demijohn Goccia Carousel. This British made red Cherrywood gadget is a charmer. It holds 3 very pretty Goccia 100ml bottles which can be filled with any of Demijohn's delicious delights.

It has been suggested that a foodie carousel is a great Mother's Day gift idea and so it is: a sunshine filled extra virgin olive oil paired with two fruitfilled vinegars is a delightful herald of the spring coming our way and the perfect gift for Mother's Day! The beautifully hand crafted woodwork allows our tear shaped bottles to stand securely without falling all over your kitchen surface, and again, you can pick the flavours...

Mothers Day Gift IdeasOur best selling and wonderful Elderflower Vinegar would be my choice, we have our fruity Raspberry Vinegar as a contrast and then you can top it off with either our Tuscan Villa Montalbano Extra Virgin Olive Oil or Yorkshire Lemon Rapeseed Oil for a treat of foodie goodness. And of course, as you may know, on finishing them you can bring that wonderful mother of yours into our shops and refill them! You do not pay for the rack or bottles again and you get to try what ever new items we have in stock!

On the other hand, though I hate to cast such a slur on the delightful British climate, I can't help but notice, as I sit at my desk accompanied by my trusty puffer heater, that spring hasn't entirely sprung yet and so the thought of warming tots of a little something making a good Mothers Day present seem to hit the spot. Perhaps a truly great Mothers Day gift would be the Liqueur Carousel filled with Rhubarb Vodka Liqueur 20.5%, Damson Gin Liqueur 22% and Spiced Rum Liqueur 20%. Those vivid pink rhubarb stems are one of the first garden treats of the year and our Rhubarb Vodka embodies that wonderful fruity sharpness spectacularly. And if, like me, and my mother perhaps too, you need to warm up again after a spell in the garden finding the rhubarb or just venturing out on a chilly springtime footer in the great outdoors then what better way to warm up than with a little Damson Gin or Spiced Rum.

On which note, what are my family getting me for Mothers Day?

Treat your mother to something different and lovely... because let's face it, not only did she make you... she then put up with you for all those years...

Frances

The Utterly Hopeless Romantic

Posted in Flavours of the Month Events Blog , by Mark Perkins, on 20th January 2015

The Utterly Hopeless Romantic

One for the Heart - A 500ml Heart shaped bottle filled with Raspberry Vodka LiqueurBeing the ever perspiring (inspiring) romantic, enjoy these words of passion:

"Whisky Burns-my throat, not a forest.
Love Burns - my heart, not a forest.
As for the forest, it's burnt itself... at least that's what I told the police..." - Jarod Kintz

Ah... that quote takes me straight back to my first girlfriend who I tried to impress one Valentine's Day. Arriving at the house a little after 6am, I spent an hour meticulously designing and executing a huge heart with our initials on her front lawn drawn in lighter fluid. Then just as the match hit the ground the call was placed. And in a husky voice I said:
"Look out of your window"
..."who is this?"
"Look out of your window"
..."Why?"
(Phone hangs up)
And the lovely unsuspecting girl moves over to her window to find her Father's immaculate garden erupting in flames with a hooded figure running away (to get water...)

What can I say, Demijohn didn't exist then....

Now, you can write a message on the bottle, anything you like such as declarations of love, all 19 stanzas of the 'Lady of Shallot', even a heart with initials on it. Oh, if only I'd known. Maybe her family would not have moved to Worcester to escape the pending arsonist threat!

The most popular bottle for a true romantic, our One for the Heart filled with our very special Raspberry Vodka Liqueur to give it that perfect pink tint, might be the ideal present? Then again, at Demijohn we also realise that this might not be everyones tipple of choice or preferential receptacle.

As the very wise and wonderfully stylish Carrie Bradshaw says: "I'd much rather be someone's shot of Whisky than everyone's cup of tea."

What Carrie is saying here....

In my belief of unfaltering literary excellence, is buy lots of Whisky, and if Whittards do not have it, come to Demijohn!

A Scottish SelectionWe do have some of the best Single Cask, Single Malt Scotch Whiskies in the World which can be decanted into any bottle you wish to allow you to choose a little bit of everything. Our Scottish Selection includes 3 of our most favoured whiskies encased in a beautiful wooden rack:

Our Bramble Scotch Whisky Liqueur, a beautifully smooth and rich whisky liqueur. A great as an alternative to Port that is fruity on the palate and has a deep whisky finish.

Demijohn's Finest Blended Scotch Whisky. This is the king of all blends, with characteristics drawn from Speyside and a hint of Islay, it has a beautiful broadness in its flavours.

And lastly, our Bladnoch Single Cask Single Malt Whisky. This is the jewel in the top of the staff. It is the connoisseurs whisky, and if you are not a connoisseur it is a great one to start off with. Being wonderfully palatable at its strength well over 50%, this whisky does not give all its secrets away on its first taste. It develops on the from the nose, to a taste all the way through, to a lasting almost sweet finish. It is one to be savoured and enjoyed.

"Love makes the world go round...Whisky makes it go round twice as fast!" - Compton Mackenzie.

Celebrate Burns Night with a Wee Dram

Posted in Flavours of the Month Events Blog , by Mark Perkins, on 16th January 2015

The Demijohn Team celebrates Burns Night in Glasgow in Jan 2011Celebrate Burns Night with a Wee Dram...

"O thou, my muse! guid auld Scotch drink!
Whether thro' wimplin worms thou jink,
Or, richly brown, ream owre the brink,
In glorious faem,
Inspire me, till I lisp an' wink,
To sing thy name!"

As you may well be aware, Demijohn started over 10 years ago on Victoria Street in Edinburgh. And ever since staff have been following the owners Angus and Frances Ferguson ceilidh dancing, whisky drinking, haggis eating, cooking Rabbie Burns night recipes, even a bit of original poetry reading... and many other Burns Night Traditions!

We have, in the last 5 years taken our Scottish ways down to England when opening our York and, last year, our Oxford shop. We have decorated them with Burns poems written on bottles, our produce from Inverness, Glasgow, East Lothian, Comrie and Dalmeny, and even the odd bit of Bag piping here and there!

If you would like to celebrate with some of our Scottish produce, get yourself the Scottish rack and have a dram with us! Included in this rack we have the best selling Rhubarb Vodka from Inverness, drop it in a little Prosecco for some really joyous effervescence!

We have our wonderful retired PE teachers from East Lothian, Robin and Derry Ford making our Bramble Scotch Whisky Liqueur (my favourite), Gooseberry Gin Liqueur and Raspberry Vodka Liqueur. And to crown the selection with the king of liqueurs, the Spiced Rum Liqueur made not too far from Glasgow by Roy and Penny Lewis.

... now if Robbie Burns Supper to you means just a fairly large tipple of Liquid Sunshine, also known as whisky. Demijohn has just the thing for that too, take a look at our latest whisky blogs or sign up to one of our Burns Night Tastings on Thurs 22 Jan 2015 and try some of our whisky first hand.

Sláinte!

"The Best Liqueur in the World" - Walnut Liqueur

Posted in Flavours of the Month , by Stuart Reid, on 18th November 2014

Paul Pacult, the renowned drink expert and author of Kindred Spirits said of a Walnut Liqueur it was the "Best Liqueur in the World". Though its history can be traced back thousands of years to when the Celts dominated Central Europe and today versions of it can be found throughout Central Europe, it is still a fairly rare drink to find in the UK. The new British made Demijohn Walnut liqueur is now here to change that.

Walnut Liqueur

Black walnut liqueur seems to be found where ever there is an abundance of walnuts growing, which seem to exist in the region around Central Europe from Italy, Southern Germany, Croatia and France. The most commonly known version, Nocino, comes from the Emilia Romagna region in Northern Italy, however, not so widely travelled from the regions where they are made, very similar drinks such as Vin de Noix from France, Nusse or Nussenschnaps from Germany and Austria, Licor de Nuez from Spain, Orechovka from Czech Republc, Diolikor from Hungary, Orzechowka from Poland and the Croatian walnut liqueur called Orahovac.

WHILE STOCKS LAST »

Traditionally unripe, green walnuts are harvested on the eve of San Giovanni (Saint John), 24th June, and are then left to soak in a mixture of alcohol and spices until at least November 3rd to ward off evil spirits and to allow the liqueur to mellow. During this time the flavour and colour from the walnuts is extracted. First a light greenish, yellow colour, leading to what appears to be black, though which is in reality, is an extremely dark green. However once the liqueur is exposed to air during the filtering process, a chemical change occurs and the liqueur really turns black.

Green Walnuts

Walnut Liqueur is the prefect drink for sipping on cold winter nights by the fire. Its unique deep, dark, espresso colour, aroma of spices and citrus, the slight bitterness of the walnuts, luxurious sweetness and a warming hint of cloves just conjures up the idea of Christmas in a glass. Other nut based liqueurs pale into insignificance in comparison.

Like many other liqueurs, Monks have long used liqueurs made from Walnuts for their medicinal properties, but it is far too good to be keep for when you are feeling poorly. It is very well suited as an after dinner digestif in a comfortable chair by the fire, but it also makes an excellent cheese or dessert drink especially with crème caramel. It can also be added to coffee or hot chocolate for a decadent treat, poured over ice-cream as a topping, or even as an ingredient to make a boozy, grown-up ice cream. It is also strong enough to hold its own in walnut liqueur cocktails such as a Walnut Martini or a Nutty Russian.  After winter as passed, if there is any left, try it in a tall glass with ginger beer and ice, for an amazing aperitif.

Taste Bud Travels

Posted in Flavours of the Month , by Mark Perkins, on 28th October 2014

If Demijohn is Neverland, our staff are the lost boys, Angus is (of course) Peter Pan and then our producers can be nothing else but fairy-dust! The substance that makes it all happen, makes the story unfold and the dream a reality.

Buy some Worcestershire Liqueurs »

In August this year, I called in on the wonderful Colin and Phyllis Hingston; the producers of such Demijohn superstars as Seville Orange Gin, Sloe Gin, Lime Vodka, Black cherry Liqueur, Blackcurrant Gin and the new Wild Bullace Liqueur; for a coffee and a cake. I of course ended up with a full tour of the gin fuelled, vodka kicker lifestyle of the Hingston's. Something I thought I would share!

Wild Bullace Liqueur

Knowing the area reasonably well, having grown up locally myself just down the road in rural Worcestershire, I thought I knew exactly where I was heading. I had got instructions from Colin, but towards the latter part of my nonsensical scrawl, I realised I had run up and down the same road twelve times looking for a sign for Colin and Phyllis's house. I decided to pull up outside another farm and call as I knew I should be close:
"Colin, apologies, I seem to be going around in circles! I'm by Brenning Farm?"
"Ah yes" came the reply "you are currently opposite a hole in the hedge"
"Correct"
"Drive through, see you soon"

So feeling what I believe Alice to have felt as she was falling through the rabbit hole, and wishing my van was more of an all-terrain four by four, I dived through the small opening, onto a unmarked road and down a long, steep drive.

On arriving, greeted with smiles, handshakes, hugs and the afore mentioned coffee, the chin wagging commenced and I don't believe it stopped for some hours. This quaint and beautiful retreat in the middle of rural Worcestershire gives a fourth dimension to the product that we sell. There were orchards and wild flowers, in fact, if it had not have been for the mild hum of the generator, the power lines over the field and the 3 cars out the front, I would have thought myself in a Jane Austin Novel.

Colin and Phyllis Hingston

We were then taken to the heart of the production a few miles from the Hingston's house, for a sneak peek into the making of these gorgeous liqueurs... and we were not disappointed! A fruity slap on the face greets you as you walk through the door. Barrels of liqueur stand to attention waiting to be drained. Others lay on bunk beds, as liqueurs like our Sloe Gin and Black Cherry Liqueur sometimes take up to a year to fully steep and there were a few barrels on racks from last years picking.

We helped stir up some of the fruit in the gin and I was amazed to see the amount of fruit actually used in the process! Mitch (Colin and Phyllis's Daughter) must have seen the look on my face; which obviously expressed the desire to jump into the barrel head first and treat the gin soaked fruit like a Labrador over a dropped plate; and dipped the paddle into the gin, scooping out the booziest, best tasting cherries I have ever seen. Lovely!

Seville Orange Gin

I was then told for tax reasons, these cherries cannot be sold (as they would cost too much) so are given to the sheep. (I suppose this explains the singing, raucous and philosophically debating farm animals you see so much of these days in the countryside!) At my obvious dismay of this wonderful, boozy fruit being offered to farm animals, I was handed a cheeky 100 weight of boozy cherries... Tastebud delight! I keep meaning to make a desert with them, put them in ice cream or in an eaton mess, but by the time they had defrosted I had 'accidentally' dropped them down my throat and then am too drunk to make anything... and so the cycle continues!

Buy some Worcestershire Liqueurs »

Selling something made in such away, and with such quality, for me is an honour. Where in today's society can you say you were so close to what you are selling. There are people's names attached the product, and it is not made by a factory but, in this case, by three individuals: Colin, Phyllis, and their daughter, Mitch.

Celebrating 10 Great Years!

Shop now with discount code 10yearsold

This year we are celebrating 10 great years in business as a liquid deli. From our humble beginnings in Edinburgh's Victoria Street in July 2004 with just 20 products on tap and 3 Staff to run the shop, (one of which was me!), we now have over 60 products to taste being sold by 35 enthusiastic Staff the World over.

Thankfully some things haven't changed. We are still very much a family owned Company with Frances and I in charge. We have always liked parties and have always done the unthinkable at Demijohn. This includes closing up shop for a day to pick some of the wonderful hedgerow fruits and plants that make up our products. If you have been caught out by this irrational behaviour in the past, I sincerely apologise now!

The reason why we go picking things; A Ball of Sloe GinThis year we even managed to break our personal record for the picking of things. We picked Elderflower in Yorkshire for our Elderflower Vinegar in June, Walnuts in East Sussex for our new Walnut Liqueur in July and earlier this week Sloe for our Sloe Gin in Galloway.

And yet it still feels like we have just opened the door to our first shop and that we have only scratched the surface of what is possible. Our future is full of excitement and challenge, and of course a few new barmy ideas for products to try and make!

Our Birthday Offer

Coming Soon....

We have been secretly developing another first in the liqueur World, a British made Walnut Liqueur and it is nearly ready for you to try. Watch out for more nutty news very soon.....

Please keep your enthusiastic emails coming in, we love them all. We look forward to seeing you very soon in one place or another.

A Curiosity with Whisky

Posted in Flavours of the Month , by Mark Perkins, on 9th October 2014

The word 'Whisky' holds many different connotations these days. For some it is either the horrid smelling rocket fuel of the goblins, or for others it is the most precious rays of unadulterated sunlight held together by water and made with the skill and experience of the best Grandmaster Wizard.

"There is no bad whisky. There is only some whiskies that aren't as good as others."
- Raymond Chandler

Whatever your thoughts on whisky, the question you ask before you buy some for yourself or someone else is, is there such thing as 'good' or 'bad' bottle?

I like the opinion of Raymond Chandler: "There is no bad whisky. There is only some whiskies that aren't as good as others."

At Demijohn we try to cover as many bases as possible by not only having some of the best single cask malt whisky on tap, but also allowing you to get a bottle as small as 100ml up to a litre! This makes very good quality whisky wonderfully affordable!

You can choose to buy our Whisky Selection racks if you do not want to put all your eggs in one bottle, or my personal opinion is book yourself on a Tasting for Two and try them all, taking full advantage of our Staff knowledge in finding your new favourite.

Build a Whisky Selection rack »

We have a small range of different types of whisky, but the ones we do have are, in my opinion, some of the best.

Whisky

Our single malt whisky comes from one cask, meaning once we have sold it, you can never again buy that whisky. We sell some of our single malts at cask strength, meaning they have not been watered down to 40% like most supermarket whisky, ours can be anything from 46 - 68 Percent! We normally like to have very contrasting whisky so we generally get our Single Malt Whisky from 4 different regions of Scotland, Highland, Lowland, Speyside and Islay.

So if you are a whisky lover, or are curious to find out more, pop into one of our shops in Edinburgh, Glasgow, York or Oxford and taste them!

The Demijohn News - Plums up for Bullace!

Posted in The Demijohn News Flavours of the Month , by Angus Ferguson, on 3rd September 2014

Plums up for Bullace!

Wild Bullace Liqueur in a Sfera 500ml bottleWe have another new drink for you to try, something really special and very rare. Wild Bullace Liqueur 23% is back! In our 10 years in business, this is only the third time we have been able to stock this incredible liqueur.

Our Wild Bullace Liqueur can best be described in taste as a refined Sloe Gin. However, Bullace is a wild plum, so it is a drink that is as fruity as a Damson while having the dryness and subtle bitterness of a Sloe.

How is it best drunk?

As a drink to accompany cheese it is exceptional and it can also be used to make our Wild Plum Bellini Cocktail if you need something to start your party off!

Our one regret is that there will be never enough of our Wild Bullace Liqueur to go around, and the demijohn is likely to have run dry well before Christmas. So if you would like to try some, please come and see us very soon!

The Elderflower Foraging Frenzy

On Monday 16th June we shut up shop in York and headed for the hedgerows around Wetherby in West Yorkshire for the now annual Demijohn elderflower pick. We need elderflower to allow Mrs Anne Sinclair to work her magic and create our The Demijohn Team head to the hedgerows to pick elderflowerunique and delicious Elderflower Vinegar. Without both our efforts, we would have none and salads would never be the same again!

Plundering hedgerows is great fun, as long as you have a long pair of trousers and a large picnic lunch with a few Demijohn Cocktails to look forward to.

Our new Vinegar Carousel with Elderflower, Raspberry and LemonWhen the sun shines, as it did on our day, there really is not much else that can beat this rural ceremony.

Our Elderflower Vinegar can be used in many ways to enhance the flavours in your food. For example, dressing fresh green salad leaves with a little Olive Oil or Lemon Rapeseed Oil to make our irresistible Elderflower Vinaigrette. Alternatively pour a little over a dollop of Vanilla Ice Cream and some quartered strawberries and you will have created an exciting Summer pudding. These are some of our favourite things.

Fairs and Events News

Mark and his Demijohn van have been roaring around the country to many Summer shows, from Malton to Norfolk. Next week we are back in Scotland and will be exhibiting at the marvellous Scottish Game Fair at Scone Palace, Perth from 4 to 6 A big picnic and a few cheeky Demijohn Cocktails make elderflower picking fun!July.

Scone Game Fair already has a fantastic reputation as a family friendly event with the most incredible selection of exhibitors and events. We are simply planning on adding to the party further by once again running not only our classic liquid deli but also our extraordinary Demijohn Cocktail Bar.

This year we are honoured to have been invited to exhibit as part of the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust Members Area on Gunmakers Row. This is special circumstance and a change from our normal Osprey Row pitch, so please don't get lost when trying to find us!

Mark and Tiggy, wild about flowers! We hope you can make the party too? A full list of our events can be found on our fairs and events page.

Thankyou to all those who volunteered themselves to come picking elderflower with us this year, Demijohnnies and guests. Without you we would have none. Have a wonderful weekend and get dressing those salads please!

Phenomenal Fuel for Fathers!

Click for our Scorched Asparagus Spears recipeBritish asparagus season is in full swing and we have been happily munching on many a bundle. Last weekend we threw a handful of asparagus spears on the BBQ for a couple of minutes, before dressing them with a slosh of Villa Montalbano Extra Virgin Olive Oil and a little of our 25 Year Old Traditional Balsamic Vinegar and finally cracking some salt over them. Our Scorched Asparagus Spears recipe is simply delicious! The same can be acheived with a hot frying pan if the weather misbehaves and prevents a BBQ.

So if you have yet to purchase a present for your Dad on Father's Day on 15th June, just remember most Fathers love eating and generally like a BBQ. We have many brilliant present ideas for Fathers at Demijohn, from our Father's Spiced Rum Ration to the Father's Day box Set.

Daddy's Sauce: A Mystic 100ml bottle of 25 Year Old Traditional Balsamic VinegarHowever, our aptly named Daddy's Sauce, a cubed 100ml Mystic bottle of our 25 Year Old Traditional Balsamic Vinegar tops them all. Not only is our Balsamic Vinegar phenomenal fuel for asparagus eating Fathers, it can be enjoyed by all the family over salads and many other dishes.

The Demijohn News - Blossoms Up!

Posted in The Demijohn News Flavours of the Month , by Angus Ferguson, on 1st May 2014

Blossoms Up!

Angus inspecting Sloe blossom on the Galloway hedgerows

Inspecting the hedgerows last week was an absolute pleasure. Warm temperatures, many critters tweeting and twerping and a wonderful display of blossom on the Blackthorn. We are hoping for a good fruit year with lots of Sloe in particular for our traditional handmade Sloe Gin, fingers crossed.

The Spring sunshine made me drag our BBQ out of hibernation and dive headlong into the The Oil & Vinegar Carouselsalad bowl again. A bed of fresh mixed green salad leaves, drizzled simply with our new harvest Villa Montalbano Extra Virgin Olive Oil and a little of our Elderflower Vinegar is hard to beat when accompanying a little impromptu BBQ.

So if this first May bank holiday weekend lives up to be as sunny as expected, plan to break outside with possibly a Citrus Sundowner or Rhubarb Bellini Cocktail or two to get started and a sumptuous meal including the first of many Summer salads. Roll on the weekend!

Events News

Spring fair season is in full bloom. This weekend we are attending for the 5th year running the brilliant Dales Food Festival at Leyburn in North Yorkshire. Food loving folk come from the hills to visit what is now regarded as one of the top food festivals in the Country.

A Good Time to Refill

A good time to refill your Demijohn bottles (Art by Chien Wei Chang)Happy New Year. It has been a soggy start to 2014. I can only hope you have avoided the worst of it? If you are like me then the first couple of weeks of January pass in a blur of administration that is difficult to motivate oneself to do. Helping to organise the writing of our Children's thankyou letters is one particular pleasure!

......And then something clicks, possibly as a result of too much sleep and not enough light. A basic survival instinct to get out and party!

Well, this is where we come in. It is time to shrug off the January blues, find those empty Demijohn bottles, give them a good washout and bring them in to one of our shops where you can have a little fun trying something new and refill for the cost of the refill only.

A Little Refill Offer

If you refill your bottles prior to the end of February then not only will you save on the cost of a new bottle, we will reward you with a 10% discount on the cost of that refill. Simply ask a member of Staff for your discount when you refill.

A Tasting Evening on the House

A Burns Tasting. The first night will be held on Friday 24 January between 6.30pm and 8pm to remember our famous Scottish poet Robert Burns. Whisky will feature quite strongly on this first evening, allowing you to try our new casks of Bladnoch Single Malt Whisky and Clynelish Single Malt Whisky among our many other delights.

A Valentines Tasting. Our second night will be held on Friday 14th February, again between 6.30pm and 8pm and have an altogether more romantic theme in One for the Heart - A heart shaped bottle of our Raspberry Vodka Liqueur 22%mind. This evening could provide a nice surprise as a Valentines present, although not just for couples!

How to apply: If you would like to be invited to attend either evening please email us with your preferred date and shop venue clearly stated.

There are, of course, some restrictions. You may apply for both evenings, however you will only be accepted for one tasting evening per person. The Demijohn News - Welcome Sloe Gin Season

Posted in The Demijohn News Flavours of the Month , by Angus Ferguson, on 14th November 2013

Winter is coming and the sloes are looking fat!

Sloe Gin in a 500ml Strauss bottleScottish Sloe BerriesThanks to a very late but no less surprising first proper frost at the beginning of the week we are all starting to feel a bit wintery here at Demijohn HQ. Being a sentimental type I'm starting to look forward to that lure into the depths of winter that is Christmas. I'm always won round by the promise of noisy gatherings of friends and family and the absolute requirement to eat and drink to utter satiation.

A rare delight around the time of the first frost is the annual sloe search and the delightful news is that they are looking really good this year, fat even. All we need to do is get out there and pick them.... Have you picked yours yet?

Luckily our 2012 vintage Sloe Gin 25% is ready for drinking and who can argue that the addition of a little something from Demijohn can make the Winter seem more appealing?

Christmas Free Delivery Offer

Please get your Christmas orders in early to avoid disappointment, and don't forget if you can't get to one of our shops you can order online at demijohn.co.uk. Order online before Sun 1st Dec 2013 and all standard UK Mainland Orders over £30 will be delivered for FREE*, whoopee! (*Normally £5.95 or free for orders over £40, other terms may apply)

Some Early Christmas Recipe Tips

Smoked Salmon, a frequently served Christmas luxury, becomes more than simply food for the brain when served with a tot of Lime Vodka Liqueur 24%, Mince pies are taken from the humdrum to the exotic when served alongside a Demijohn Spiced Rum Liqueur 20%, and Stilton reveals all its majesty when paired with a Somerset Pomona 20%. Tempted to try?

Dr Alice Prochaska opens Oxford to the skirl of the pipesOxford Tastings

Since our launch on 9th October, our newest branch of Demijohn at 20 Little Clarendon Street in Oxford would appear to be going down a storm. Darren Anderson, our Oxford Shop Manager and his magnificent new team are enjoying the whirlwind of your enthusiasm. We had a great response to our launch tasting evening events, which gave about 150 of you the opportunity to hear a light hearted introduction to all we do, while enjoying a taster of our wares. Thankyou to everyone who has been involved so far, especially my Uncle who piped us open on day one!

If you missed them, we aim to run a few similar "on the house" tasting evenings early in the New Year within all our shops which you will be able to sign up for via a future newsletter. However, if you cannot wait that long and would like to book your own private evening for friends or work colleagues in the next few weeks then please contact us and we will be more than happy to plan an event with you. Sitia Extra Virgin Olive Oil in an Antica Quadra 500ml bottle

I think we can all say, hand on heart in Britain, "what a wonderful Summer we have had!"

Although the Summer heat is starting to wane, there is still another treat in store to keep us in positive spirits for a few weeks more; fruit! I love this A simple tomato and basil saladpart of the year, being a bit of a fruit bat. However the question remains, what do you do with the glut?

Tomatoes, for example, that have ripened all at once. My Wife's answer was to make a simple Basil and Tomato Salad. Using our new Cretan Sitia Extra Virgin Olive Oil and our irresistible 12 year old Traditional Balsamic Vinegar. This is a brilliantly quick and easy recipe for a light lunch or a healthy starter.

If you are looking for another quick starter then try our other new recipe, Traditional Bruschetta. So simple even I can make this one! And the secret to its success, wonderfully strong, fresh Olive Oil. Try it with any of our single estate olive oils, our new Sitia, Kabbadates or Villa Montalbano Extra Virgin Olive Oil, mouth-wateringly delicious!

Our News

The Demijohn Challenge - not just for strong men you know!If you look at our updated Fairs and Events page you will see that we have been rattling about the country during the Summer. We are certainly making our new Events and Marketing Manager, Mark Perkins, work hard for his money!

Throughout our travels, we have met a brilliant array of old friends and wonderful new people from the CLA Game Fair in Warwickshire and RHS Tatton Park Flower Show in Cheshire to our more normal stamping grounds of Scone Game Fair in Scotland and Huddersfield Food and Drink Festival in Yorkshire.

Despite exhausting ourselves in the attempt, it has been fun! Thankyou to all those who have made it to see us so far, however we are currently exhibiting at Burghley International Horse Trials until Sunday this week and will be at Blenheim Palace Horse Trials in Oxfordshire next week. So if you are nearby and need a refill, we would very much like to see you!

A tasting evening in Oxford..on the house!

A tasting evening in Oxford on the houseOur most exciting news, however, (which is still top secret so please don't tell anyone!), is that we are to open a new branch of Demijohn in Oxford in the Autumn. More details will follow as the plan comes to life, however if you would like to be invited to one of our launch tasting evenings at the new shop, then please contact us expressing interest.

The launch tasting evenings will be run on a similar basis to our standard tasting evening. The events will be held on a number of week nights over the next couple of months and will be free to attend on the condition that you bring at least one friend who might also appreciate what we have to offer. They will be light hearted and fun, but clearly subject to availability!

It has been a while since we had Bladnoch Single Malt Whisky on tap, but our new cask strength 11 Year Old Bladnoch Single Malt Whisky 52.9% is certainly wrinkling a few excited noses!

Proving to be as popular as our original 20 and 21 casks of Bladnoch, that Bladnoch 11 year old Single Malt Whisky 52.9% in a Strauss 500ml bottleare sadly now just a distant taste memory, this new Lowland Malt, cask No. 314 has something special about it. And it is not just about the taste.

Our new 11 Year Old Bladnoch Single Malt Whisky 52.9% represents some of the first Whisky produced under the new ownership at Bladnoch Distillery of brothers, Colin and Raymond Armstrong. Two great men, full of character and passion about their spirit and they have created a masterpiece. If your dram is a smooth drink, with a hint of fruit and whiff of oak, then I think you should sneak in for a wee sniff of this!

Next time in The Demijohn News: Preparing for the annual Sloe pick....

We always love to hear your news, views and ideas, good or bad, so do please send in your thoughts.

       Yours,

Angus in action on the Demijohn Cocktail Bar

We may be a week or two past actual midsummer, but I am determined not to let our precious Summer slip away so easily! To remember it, we have created a new cocktail drink called the Midsummer Muddle.

Combining the rich fruity flavours of our delicious Morello Cherry Brandy 17%, smooth apple taste of our Somerset Pomona 20%, and marmalady twang of our delightful Seville Orange Gin 26%, this is cocktail to refresh, excite and enjoy.

Sip while watching the tennis or entertaining friends in the garden, fantastic!

Event News

We have been rattling our new Events and Marketing Manager, Mark Perkins, about the country over the last few weeks with our Demijohn travelling roadshow, exhibiting at events in Warwickshire, Cheshire and even Norfolk!

This week however we are back in Scotland for the official launch of our new Demijohn Cocktail Bar at the Scottish Game Fair at Scone Palace, near Perth.

The Demijohn Cocktail BarWe will be exhibiting again this year at Stand 29 on Osprey Row, between Fri 5th to Sun 7th July. Not only will we be bottling our products in our classic liquid deli style, but mixing up some of our favourite cocktail drinks with our products, including of course our new Midsummer Muddle.

Scone Game Fair is already regarded as one of the best country pursuit events in Scotland, this year it will hopefully be known as one of the best cocktail parties in Scotland! So with the temperatures forecast to reach the 20's this weekend, I can see our stand being a popular destination.

An updated list of all our events we are planning to attend for the year can be found on our Fairs and Events page.

The Elderflower Picking Lunch - Yorkshire 2013Last week we began the now annual expedition to pick elderflower for our much loved Elderflower Vinegar. As a simple dressing or vinaigrette for fresh salad leaves, there is possibly nothing comparable to Elderflower Vinegar.

Closing up shop last Thursday, we went picking with an enthusiastic team of 7 in the fields around Wetherby, West Yorkshire. We gathered what we now think was a record amount, but a long hard day plundering hedgerows needs a good reward, and a serious lunch of a few Demijohn drinks is definitely the carrot!

Our hard won pickings were delivered later that evening to Mrs Sinclair's Kitchen, just North of Edinburgh. Amazingly after some speedy production Picking elderflower is a team game!work (for which thankyou Mrs Sinclair!), our first batch of Elderflower Vinegar is ready and will be available to purchase in our shops, online and at Scone Game Fair from Friday this week.

We are planning a second picking day, weather dependent, next week here in Scotland. I think that lunch will be rather good too!

Whatever you are planning over the weekend, whether it be watching the tennis, gardening or partying with friends and family, we hope it is dry, warm and above all fun!

       Yours,

                  Angus

Team Demijohn go Elderflower Picking in YorkshireSummer brings so many things to different people; holidays, sun, beaches, alfresco dining, an ice cold cocktail on the riverside....

For me for the past 3 years, since working at demijohn in York, Summer brings with it the annual Demijohn elderflower pick!

Over the next couple of weeks the Demijohn Team and anyone else who is crazy enough, will be taking to the Yorkshire and Scottish hedgerows to gather as much elderflower as we can for our beautiful Elderflower Vinegar: so sweet you can put it on ice cream; so refreshing you can drink it with sparkling water; and so fresh it livens up the most boring of salads!

The farm we pick on is the same land that makes our Yorkshire Lemon Rapeseed Oil and the two go fantastically in one of our most popular salad dressing combinations to date, in the Elderflower Vinegar and Lemon Oil Ball.

If you would be interested in joining us either this year or in the future, drop us an email!

The Demijohn News - Fortunate Fathers

Posted in The Demijohn News Flavours of the Month , by Angus Ferguson, on 30th May 2013

Our new Gooseberry Gin. Go on, give it a Goo!

Fathers are rather fortunate that Demijohn exists in my Fatherly opinion, as the choice for Father's Day presents got somewhat better from about July 2004 onwards when we opened.....

If you are faced with the annual challenge of buying a Father's Day present this year, here are some quick ideas for presents that I personally would like to receive (my Wife take note please!):

  • Gooseberry Gin Liqueur 17% - Newly back on tap, this drink makes a cracking Gooseberry G&T!
  • Father's Day Box Set - A great idea for a whisky drinker who also appreciates a hand crafted wooden box.
  • Daddy's Sauce - Not every Father drinks, but we all eat. Salads will never taste the same again with this 25 YO Balsamic Vinegar.
  • Father's Gold - If your Father is a whisky lover, then this smokey Islay Single Malt will certainly appeal.
  • Father's Spiced Rum Ration - A velvety smooth, dark Caribbean rum that is every Sailor's treat.
  • Somerset Cider Brandy 42% - If your Father is a little cheesy, consider this alternative digestif to Whisky.
  • Demijohnnie Gin 50% - My own cup. At 50% abv, this is not for the faint hearted. Disturbingly good straight over ice!

Order over £40 online by Monday 10th June to ensure you receive a free* delivery prior to Father's Day on Sunday 16th June. (*Please note free delivery applies to UK mainland delivery addresses only).

Pici Asparagus with Balsamic VinegarI absolutely love pasta! Well done Italy for inventing such a food. However, you do need to have the odd inspirational thought when creating a pasta dish to ensure you don't get stuck in a "Pasta Bake Rut" or PBR for short.

Messing about at the stove last week I came up with a delightful little dish using fresh British Asparagus which has just come into season (and thanks to the long Winter, I do mean just!).

My pici pasta with asparagus uses our irresistible 25 year old Balsamic Vinegar and our grassy Kabbadates Extra Virgin Olive Oil. It is fabulously quick to make, serves two good eaters and is superbly easy to wash up. Whoever you are making it for will think you are a legend in the kitchen. See how I made it?

25 year old Tagliavini Aceto Balsamico di Modena Extra Vecchio in a Mystic 100ml stacking bottleHaving just returned from our action packed adventures at the Dales Food Festival at the start of May, we return next week to Leyburn in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales to support another good cause the ABF The Soldiers' Charity. Their Spring Fair will be held in Tennants Auctioneers on Wed 22 May (5-9pm) and Thurs 23 May (10am to 4pm). It is a tremendous gathering of small, high quality, independent traders selling everything from china and rugs to chorizo and our Spiced Rum! So if you visited us in Leyburn at the food festival and need a quick refill of your Gooseberry Gin Liqueur bottle, for example, we would love to see you!

And finally.....

An apology. I am sorry for any frustrations you may have suffered with the April "Rhubarb" edition of The Demijohn News when trying to open the links within the email. We had a technical hiccup with our new e-newsletter format which is now happily resolved. Thankyou to all those who wrote in kindly to inform us of the problem.

We always like hearing from you, with any stories or recipe ideas that you have. So please keep the emails coming!

Time for a Food Festival

After such a long Winter we all need to get outside. This weekend marks the start of our event year with the wonderful, the marvellous, the epic Dales Festival of Food and Drink (Sat 4 to Mon 6 May 2013). We will have our new Gooseberry Gin Liqueur 17% on tap amongst other products, but we are only a small part of something much larger. Held in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales at Leyburn this really is a first class event run by some amazingly enthusiastic volunteers. From asparagus to mouth watering pork pies, real Wensleydale Cheeses....as you can see I find it hard to concentrate on our stand!

Whatever your plans for the weekend, I hope they are sun filled and fun.

       Yours,

             Angus

Seville Orange Marmalade Ice CreamThis deliciously grown-up ice-cream is wonderful served on top of freshly peeled orange segments.

Ingredients

Preparation

Mix together the ingredients adding the Gin sparingly. Check the taste and adjust the quantity of Seville Orange Gin accordingly. Chill the mixture for half an hour then churn in an ice cream maker. Freeze in an ice cream tub remembering to remove it from the freezer half an hour before serving to allow it to soften a little.

Spiced Rum Liqueur 20%I have always loved brown bread ice-cream, I think it's an inspired recipe that sounds so worthy, yet tastes so delicious. And now I have found a way to make it a bit more decadent.

Ingredients

  • 84g wholemeal bread
  • 56g granulated sugar
  • 3 tbsp water
  • 1 pint double cream
  • approximately 100ml Spiced Rum Liqueur 20%

Preparation

Whiz the bread to crumbs in a food processor then toast briefly in a dry frying pan turning them until they are golden brown. Melt the sugar in the water in a heavy pan, don't stir, just shake it occassionally until the sugar is evenly melted, then boil rapidly for 2 minutes. Remove from the heat and immediately stir in the breadcrumbs until the sugar syrup cools into crystals on the crumbs. Stir the Spiced Rum gently into the cream. Be prepared to taste until reaching the right flavour, not too much Spiced Rum, just enough to taste it in the cream. Now whip the cream mixture and once whipped gently fold in the crumb mixture. Freeze in an ice cream tub and remember to remove it from the freezer about half an hour before serving.

Not only is it delicious with dark chocolate, it might give you the feeling that spring is in the air! A Ball of Marmalady GinSo, whether your party is with family or friends this Easter, consider ordering your alternative Easter Egg from Demijohn to spice it up a bit.
